As the holiday season gains momentum, so does a growing debate on whether it’s appropriate to request seat changes from fellow passengers on a plane.
A TikTok video, posted by Tammy Nelson and amassing over five million views, captures her recounting an incident where a woman sought to exchange her middle seat for Nelson’s window seat to sit next to her children.
In the video’s caption, Nelson reveals she declined the seat switch because she “desperately needed some sleep” having only had “90 minutes of sleep the night before” and knowing she had to give a presentation to 500 people.
She also notes that the woman’s children appeared to be around 11 and 15 years old, with the mom easily within arm’s reach of both from the middle seat in the row behind them.
In an interview broadcasted on “Good Morning America” last Friday, Nelson provided further insight into her perspective on the matter.
“I apologized and explained, ‘I really need a window,’ expressing my reluctance to switch. She wasn’t pleased,” Nelson recounted regarding the incident.
Tyler Regan from Los Angeles, another frequent flier, shared his perspective on the matter with “GMA,” providing a more detailed view. While generally opposed to seat switching, Regan acknowledged that circumstances might influence his decision.
“There are occasions where you might agree to switch seats, and that’s acceptable,” he stated. “I just don’t appreciate the idea that you might be deemed inconsiderate if you choose not to.”

According to Rosalinda Randall, an etiquette expert interviewed by “GMA,” there is no obligation for anyone to agree to switch seats on a plane if requested. Nevertheless, she emphasizes that there’s no harm in posing a question to “anybody about anything.”
Randall advises being prepared for unexpected responses, stating, “So you can always ask. What I tell people is, if you’re going to ask, have a good reason.”
In the realm of travel, unforeseen situations can arise, particularly for mothers like Izzy Anaya from New York navigating family trips. She views agreeing to seat switches as an opportunity to perform a kind gesture, especially when faced with scenarios like honeymooning couples or families with kids while traveling alone.
An important consideration during travel is that some airlines charge varying prices for different seats. Opting for the least expensive ticket may entail the risk of being assigned a seat separate from your travel group. When requesting seat changes from fellow passengers, it’s essential to be mindful of their potential circumstances.
“Just be aware that the person may have chosen that flight for that seat for a very specific reason,” cautioned Sara Nelson, the international president of the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA, during an interview with “GMA.” “They may have paid for it. They may have a very specific reason for sitting there. So don’t be surprised if the answer is no.”
