WhatsApp now allows you control who can add you to groups

"Today, we're introducing a new privacy setting and invite system to help you decide who can add you to groups". You can find it inside the app's Settings, Account, Privacy, and Groups. Any group invite you receive will have three days validity before it expires.

Now, you have the ability to accept or reject a group invite. "Everyone" will allow you to be added to anyone's group even if they are not in your contact list.

According to Fast Company, the new feature will be available under the privacy settings in the app.

Admins of the groups will be able to send you invites for joining their groups via a direct message. Selecting "Everyone" will let everyone with your WhatsApp number add you to a group.

With these changes, WhatsApp hopes to give users more control over the group messages they get. So you stay and endure the daily barrage of good morning greetings and cancer hoaxes until it's safe to leave the group.

To enable the feature, users can go to "settings" option in the WhatsApp app and select one of the three options - nobody, my contacts, or everyone. This has led to a situation called spam group invites that users pulling their hair out in frustration. The feature will roll out soon for users in India.

Nearly two months ago, it was reported that WhatsApp was developing a tool within settings that will allow you to manage how you get invited by others into groups. It had imposed a limit of five on the number of times a message could be forwarded on WhatsApp. This new feature will begin rolling out on 3 April 2019 and will be released in stages worldwide in the coming weeks.

The new feature allows you to stop anyone who isn't saved in your contacts from adding you to a group, or alternatively, you can completely ban everyone from being able to add you. For family groups and groups created by someone they know, users feel guilty leaving or hate it when their exit is announced by Whatsapp.

Over 200 million people in India now use WhatsApp.

Like other social platforms, WhatsApp has played a role in the spread of fake news.
