Sanders Rakes in $18M to Take Early Lead in 2020 Fundraising

Sanders is leading Democratic presidential candidates in the early money chase with more than $18 million in contributions during the first seven weeks of his candidacy.

Harris' campaign says it has received 218,000 individual contributions, but the number of unique donors could end up being smaller than that figure.

Sanders raised almost $6 million in the first 24 hours of his current campaign, with his staff emphasizing that the average donation was $27. Amy Klobuchar and former Gov. John Hickenlooper both said their campaigns took in one-day donations of $1 million.

Still, we can make one assertion with confidence: In just the first three months of the year before the election, several 2020 Democratic contenders will shatter the record fundraising haul over the entirety of the 2016 campaign by Libertarian Gary Johnson. The campaign added that 88 percent of donations were under $200, and a majority of donors were younger than 39 years old. 64% percent of Vermont's voters approve of Sanders and numerous polls place him among the most popular politicians in America. (He raised an unbelievable $228 million for his primary against Hillary Clinton, a number that still boggles the mind.) Still, just because Sanders' number isn't surprising, it also shouldn't be taken for granted.

Sanders' first quarter haul exceeded that of California Sen.

This article will be updated as Democratic candidates announce their first quarter fundraising.

South Bend, Idndiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg (BOO'-tuh-juhj) launched an exploratory committee two months ago and said Monday he'd raised more than $7 million in the quarter.

Just as important as the bottom line: Buttigieg said he has nearly 160,000 unique donors, a mark that meets the new grassroots fundraising threshold that the Democratic National Committee has set for candidates to qualify for the initial summer debates.

"These resources are going to allow us to compete on all levels in all of the Super Tuesday states", Jeff Weaver, Sanders' 2016 campaign manager and a senior adviser to the senator, told reporters on a conference call Tuesday.

Harris isn't eschewing high-dollar fundraisers. Her campaign was slow to get off the ground as she struggled to put the controversy over her Native American heritage behind her. Before the midterm elections, for example, as NPR's Peter Overby reported, the Trump campaign held 18 rallies in 20 days campaigning for Republican Senate candidates.
