Ole Gunnar Solskjaer: Manchester United's defence were superb

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer: Manchester United's defence were superb

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admits Manchester United were fortunate to win after seeing his side beat Watford 2-1 on Saturday.

United had scored twice through Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial and they would've come away with a clean-sheet as well had it not been for a superbly worked Watford goal.

"We had to because they were dominant but Chris (Smalling) and Jonah (Phil Jones) especially were fantastic, (they) kept us in it".

"It's exciting. I was excited when Gareth took over because I think he spent enough time with the players from a very young age", added the former England captain.

The Norwegian won 14 out of 19 games in all competitions to revive the club's challenge for a top-four place as well as reaching the Champion League quarter-finals.

The Dutchman's attempt to repaint his time at United, offering the defence his team performed better than their points tally suggested, conveniently glossed over the fact the style of the performance was generally the problem. We created chances. We scored a great goal, could have had more goals because it was end-to-end in the last 20 minutes of the first half. Solskjaer's side started the second period as badly as they had kicked off the game.

Speaking in an interview quoted by Metro, Giggs said: "I'm delighted to see Ole has got the job permanently". But their decision making in the final third was continuing to let them down. "He is exceptional going forward and I can't wait to see him blossom".

"Paul is important for us and we couldn't keep the ball today".

"Then in my last season, when I started working with the reserves, I thought "yeah, I like this, I like this environment". We want to learn and improve and get better and we will do".

Manchester United were poor in the first half, showing signs of their lacklustre performances from earlier in the season.

Watford counterpart Javi Gracia was naturally disappointed after his side dominated for large parts of the game only to leave Old Trafford empty-handed.

But before they go all out in the transfer business, they need to offer new deals to players whose contracts are running out.

"We tried until the end because the team believed until the end but it wasn't enough".
