Mobile carriers in South Korea & U.S. scramble to launch 5G services

Mobile carriers in South Korea & U.S. scramble to launch 5G services

Claim and counterclaim: South Korea says it beat the U.S. by a few hours because three of its carriers-SK Telecom, KT, and LG Uplus-launched 5G services at 11 p.m. local time on Wednesday. - The world's biggest smartphone and memory chip maker Samsung Electronics warned of a 60 percent-plus plunge in first-quarter operating profits on April 5, in the face of a weakening chip market.

The new network is predicted to drive technologies such as self-driving cars, augmented reality, VR and "smart cities", where sensors help cities to monitor everything from pollution to traffic.

It has data transmission speeds 20 times faster than the current 4G long-term evolution (LTE) wireless technology.

SK Telecom spokeswoman Irene Kim told Reuters the company had internal discussions and chose to launch the 5G service early as the company had networks and customers ready.

The debate to claim the top position in 5G race - among South Korea's SK Telecom and rivals and USA telecom giants AT&T and Verizon will continue in the 5G space because of lack of clarity on standards.

Early: Verizon launched a 5G service on the same day in parts of Chicago and Minneapolis, a week ahead of its planned launch date.

The launch was announced for Friday and even preceded that of USA carrier Verizon, which also began on Wednesday to commercialize 5G service in Chicago and Minneapolis.

The network is expected to rake in some $565 billion in global economic benefits, according to London-based Global System for Mobile Communications, an industry alliance.

On Wednesday, SK Telecom showed off K-pop stars and an Olympic gold medallist as its first 5G customers.

SK Telecom revealed its 5G pricing plans showing that 5G mobile data price will be cheaper than 4G in Korea.

The implications of the new technology have pitted Washington against Beijing - whose firms dominate 5G technology - in an increasingly bitter standoff.

SK Telecom chief executive Park Jung-ho told the media on Wednesday that the company had secured the widest 5G coverage and, as of 2 April, it had a total of 34,000 base stations. Verizon launched its commercial 5G services at 1 a.m. on April 4, two hours later than Korea.

The S10 5G's screen is great for videos and games and the phone packs readily available 5G networks.

Meanwhile in the US, Verizon is offering the Moto Z3 with a 5G Moto Mod.
