Mick Schumacher did his father proud in a Ferrari F1 auto

Mick Schumacher did his father proud in a Ferrari F1 auto

Mick Schumacher made his long-awaited Formula One debut in Bahrain on Tuesday as he began the in-season test for Ferrari. I think time will tell if that's next year, if that's the years to follow, really. "It felt like home in the garage from the very first moment, with a lot of people that know me since I was very young", he said. The SF90 is incredible because of the power it has but it is also smooth to drive and that's why I enjoyed myself so much.

"I want to arrive into F1 being a complete racing driver, being as prepared as possible".

"I was feeling like I could even brake at the 50-metre board at Turn 1, but obviously that's not possible".

Speaking to the BBC afterwards, Schumacher said the Ferrari garage "felt like home".

Lewis Hamilton, who took the chequered flag on Sunday, finished sixth in testing for Mercedes over 71 laps.

Schumacher, who won the F3 championship last season, is a member of the Ferrari driver academy and is racing in F2 this season for the Prema team.

In 24 hours, Russell improved his best lap time by more than four and a half seconds, ending a 101-lap outing with a best time of 1:29.029.

The youngster took to the Ferrari SF90 for his maiden F1 drive on Tuesday morning on a day when running was interrupted by rain.

It's interesting to note that just 0.22s separate Schumacher's best times with Ferrari and Alfa Romeo, while Russell has the honour of finishing the test first and. last!

Mick, 20, drove 56 laps in Bahrain, describing the experience as "astonishing".

"What is important is for Mick to hopefully one day, hopefully not too late, to reach Formula One and to be there for many years".

But final bragging rights for the fastest lap of Bahrain's in-season test would go to Mercedes and George Russell, the Brit clocking in with a 1m29.029s under his belt.

McLaren rookie Lando Norris set the third fastest test time, completing 22 laps.

Alonso is driving as part of Pirelli's tyre testing programme, though, so will be following its guidance rather than working through McLaren developments. He has been clear he wants to help the team develop the vehicle and has not ruled out a return to F1.

Note, Mick Schumacher has previously driven an F1 auto, though not during an official F1 event.

Alonso said: "It's a step forward in every aspect of the vehicle".

Following his European Formula 3 title previous year, Mick Schumacher made his Formula 2 debut on the same track at the weekend, finishing eighth and sixth in the two races. The vehicle has more grip, the auto is less draggy on the straights, the engine is a big step better as well.
