McConnell to Trump: We're not repealing, replacing Obamacare

Trump accuses Democrats of seeking "a socialist takeover of American healthcare", and is certain to take that argument onto the 2020 campaign trail.

Reversing himself in the face of Republican consternation, Mr. Trump said his party would not produce a health care plan of its own, as he had promised, until after the elections, meaning he will only try to fulfill his first-term promise to repeal and replace his predecessor's signature program if he wins a second term.

"I don't like the way the votes are being tallied", Trump said.

"I made it clear to him that we were not going to be doing that in the Senate", McConnell told reporters.

While President Donald Trump's latest push to dismantle Obamacare is on hold for now, millions still stand to lose health insurance if it is ever repealed. But his motivations were always as political as they were legislative, with the president not wanting to cede a 2020 campaign issue to Democrats.

You might say, well, of course not - Democrats control the House, and they won't approve of any Republican health care plan.

He recalled a "friend" running for governor who lost a race in 2018 that he should have easily won and said that any future Republican candidate had to protect coverage for pre-existing medical conditions, a concept that some Republicans were not comfortable with.

"I wanted to delay it myself", Trump said during an event at the White House.

Trump has said Republicans will produce a superior replacement plan, contending in a tweet on Tuesday that it will be "far less expensive & much more usable than ObamaCare".

Democrats made the Texas lawsuit a key element in their health care message past year.

Some traditional GOP donors have not yet committed to backing the president in 2020, but RNC officials warned that Trump critics weren't welcome in the party.

The GOP's bitter internal fight over health care in 2017 remains a sore subject for the president. "I would suggest that's good for us (Democrats)".

"He'd love to be able to address it now, but we know that Democrats are controlled by the far, radical left wing of their party and they are a total contrast to what we need and what the president wants to see happen when it comes to health care", Sanders said. John McCain cast the deciding vote not to repeal the healthcare plan. That means, regardless of where you get your health insurance, if you have a pre-existing condition, you will be paying a lot more - if you can even get an insurance company to cover you.

He noted that Republicans beat Democrats on issues like border security, a strong military, taxes, and other issues, but that Democrats could win elections on health care alone.

At least three Republicans - Maryland governor Larry Hogan, former MA governor Bill Weld and former OH governor John Kasich - are considering primary challenges to the president, but the campaign has already tasked aides with making sure all delegates at next year's convention are committed to Trump. Although they had fiercely opposed the law since 2010, it gradually became more popular with voters and was considered a chief factor in last November's Democratic victories that cost the GOP control of the House of Representatives.

He predicted that a district court decision that struck down the entire Affordable Care Act "is not likely to survive all the way to the Supreme Court".
