Manchester United ready to spend €350m on five new players

Manchester United ready to spend €350m on five new players

The Norwegian was also weighing up how to ensure his team make it into next season's Champions League after the defeat at Wolves left them in fifth place on 61 points, still behind Tottenham Hotspur on goal difference, but now having played a game more.

"I've said we need 15 points in last seven games or 18 from the last eight", Solskjaer told a news conference.

"Yeah (they are two players we can build on), and you have got loads of players who you can build a team around and those are the two that you asked me about". Our performance deserved the win.

Undaunted and fielding a strong team despite their own distraction of an FA Cup semi-final against Watford on Sunday, Wolves quickly settled on a cold night at Molineux and began creating chances of their own.

"But for their keeper we should have won".

Paul Pogba and Marcus Rashford are the star names that have been linked with moves away but the pair are individuals that Solskjaer believes can fulfil their ambitions at United.

Jota levelled after 25 minutes after Joao Moutinho robbed Fred following David De Gea's short pass and it got worse for United when Young saw red after 57 minutes for his second foul on Jota - referee Mike Dean's 100th Premier League dismissal.

United could have been 3-0 up inside the first 20 minutes before Diogo Jota cancelled out Scott McTominay's first senior goal.

That enabled Wolves to pour forward, and in the 77th minute they got the victor when Smalling inadverently prodded the ball over his own line after a goalmouth scramble.

Wolves manager Nuno Espirito Santo was thrilled with his side's display.

He said: "No, there's no such thing".

"That moment we suffered and took time to react, but we had a fantastic reaction and managed the game better".

"The preparation for the next game starts tomorrow".

"I'm pleased with the performance, that's what is important".

After being confirmed as United's new permanent manager, Solskjaer is expected to oversee a major squad shake-up over the coming months with a number of experienced players set to leave Old Trafford.
