Magic Johnson Steps Down As Lakers President

Magic Johnson Steps Down As Lakers President

The Lakers' season, meanwhile, ended on Tuesday night, as Los Angeles fell to Portland on a buzzer-beater.

"I think I had more fun when I was able to be the big brother and the ambassador to everybody", Johnson said in his farewell address.

According to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, Johnson and Pelinka met with LeBron James and agent Rich Paul on Saturday.

"(Jeanie Buss) and I have such an awesome relationship", Johnson said.

"I'm good with where I am", a relieved Johnson added. What am I doing?' So, I'm going to go back to that attractive life. I get it. Because it was hard for me to go do that, to make this decision and come to this conclusion.

"But I think that with and I, I want to always preserve our relationship". I'm so happy. I'm a guy who always knows when things are right, and this is right.

The Lakers. meanwhile, paid tribute to Johnson in a brief statement.

The five-time National Basketball Association champion spent just two years in the role but said he had felt "handcuffed" in the position throughout his tenure. We are deeply grateful to Magic for all that he has done for our franchise - as a player, an ambassador and an executive. Johnson says his current health is ideal, and he insists no health concerns were part of his decision to quit the job that seemed to be his ultimate destiny. "I don't wanna.[team owner Jeanie Buss] and I have such [an] wonderful relationship".

Johnson also put to rest that this unexpected move wasn't made because of Luke Walton's future as the team's head coach.

Johnson explained running the Lakers did not allow him to function in the role he loves most - being a statesman for the game of basketball. Some of Johnson's other moves have worked out much better, including the Lakers' drafting of Lonzo Ball, the acquisition of Kyle Kuzma and the bargain signing of center JaVale McGee.

The Lakers entered the game Tuesday night with a 37-44 record and will miss the playoffs for a franchise-record sixth consecutive season. It was widely believed Johnson was going to fire Walton following the season. If that's what Johnson and general manager Rob Pelinka wanted, then so be it.

In speaking to reporters, Johnson said he was exhausted of the many things plaguing the team ranging from injuries, to internal politics to even betrayals. "I couldn't stand to tell her". "But she's going to be fine, and I'm going to be fine".
