DOJ: Mueller report to be released Thursday

DOJ: Mueller report to be released Thursday

Early last week Attorney General William Barr promised it would be available within a week, leading many to speculate it would have been out this past Friday or today at the latest.

What to watch: The report is expected to be around 400 pages, not including underlying evidence. But on the issue of whether Trump obstructed justice, Barr said the report neither exonerated or indicted the president.

Democrats also are skeptical of Barr's conclusion because he has always been opposed to the special counsel investigation and was hired by Trump.

"Why should Radical Left Democrats in Congress have a right to retry and examine the $35,000,000 (two years in the making) No Collusion Mueller Report when the crime committed was by Crooked Hillary, the DNC and Dirty Cops?"

After Barr released his four-page letter, Trump claimed "complete and total exoneration", condemned "an illegal takedown that failed" and accused unnamed political enemies of treasonous acts.

Democrats, meanwhile, have dismissed Barr's summary of Mueller's report, arguing it is both incomplete and insufficient. He's said the redacted material will be color-coded to indicate whether it involves classified material, grand jury information or damage to the reputation of a private citizen "peripheral" to the investigation.

The president's latest comments come days after he called the probe an attempted "coup", while Barr promised to investigate FBI "spying" on Trump.

Barr on March 24 sent a four-page letter to politicians detailing Mueller's "principal conclusions" including that the 22-month probe did not establish that President Donald Trump's 2016 campaign team conspired with Russian Federation.

Barr may have been referring to a surveillance warrant the Federal Bureau of Investigation obtained in the fall of 2016 to monitor the communications of former Trump campaign aide Carter Page, who has not been charged with any wrongdoing. He also was present at a Trump Tower meeting in August 2016, three months before the election, at which an Israeli social media specialist spoke with the president's son, Donald Trump Jr, about how his firm Psy-Group, which employed several former Israeli intelligence officers, could help the Trump campaign, according to the New York Times.

Barr later softened his tone, adding "I am not saying improper surveillance occurred".

Democrats in Congress have demanded that Barr provide them with Mueller's full report - and all the evidence behind it. Thursday's release will mark the first step in what promises to be a lengthy battle with Democratic lawmakers over how much of the report they are allowed to see.

The scores of outstanding questions about the investigation has not stopped the president's allies from declaring victory.
