Congress manifesto speaks Pakistan's stand on Kashmir: PM Modi in Maharashtra rally

Congress manifesto speaks Pakistan's stand on Kashmir: PM Modi in Maharashtra rally

"Perhaps if the BJP - a right-wing party - wins, some kind of settlement in Kashmir could be reached", Imran Khan told a small group of foreign journalists in an interview.

In a scathing criticism of the BJP's manifesto for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls, Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday said it was the voice of "an isolated man", besides being "short sighted" and "arrogant". "Muslim-ness is being attacked".

Modi has made his strong stance on national security a key part of the BJP's election campaign, following a recent flare up in tensions with arch foe Pakistan, which also lays claims to Kashmir.

The BJP's pledge this week to propose stripping decades-old special rights from the people of Jammu and Kashmir, which prevent outsiders from buying property in the state, was a major concern, though it could also be electioneering, Imran Khan said.

These include all the 25 Lok Sabha seats of Andhra Pradesh, 17 seats of Telangana, five seats of Uttarakhand, two seats each of Arunachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and Meghalaya, and one seat each of Chhattisgarh, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, Tripura, Andaman & Nicobar Islands as well as Lakshadweep.

Khan said Kashmir was a political struggle and there was no military solution, adding that Kashmiris suffered if armed militants from Pakistan came across the border, leading to Indian army crackdowns.

Jaitley also cited an Indian airstrike against an alleged terrorist camp in Pakistan after a suicide bomber killed 40 Indian soldiers in disputed Kashmir in February as proof that the incumbents have taken a hard stand against terrorism.

Hours after the BJP released its manifesto for the Lok Sabha elections 2019, Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party were quick to spot an error in its promises for women.

India carried out air strikes in February on a suspected militant camp based in Balakot, Pakistan, who had claimed responsibility for a deadly auto bombing in Kashmir.

Pakistan responded with air strikes of its own.

India goes to polls next week where Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) would be trying its utmost to return with a thumping win while the main opposition party, Indian National Congress (INC), would attempt to deny Prime Minister Modi's party continuity in the saddle and to win a majority.

The election will be held in seven phases and votes will be counted on May 23, with results likely to be clear the same day.

Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi warned on Sunday that Islamabad had "reliable intelligence" that India would attack again this month.
