Assange tried to create 'centre for spying' inside embassy: Ecuador President

Assange tried to create 'centre for spying' inside embassy: Ecuador President

Lawyer Jennifer Robinson told British TV network Sky News on Sunday the Ecuadorian government is spreading alleged falsehoods to divert attention from its decision to revoke his asylum and allow his arrest at its British embassy.

He told The Guardian: "We can not allow our house, the house that opened its doors, to become a centre for spying".

Ecuadorian President Lenin Moreno withdrew Assange's political asylum this week, opening the way for his seizure by British police.

"We are faced with a humanitarian imperative now that Assange is in United Kingdom custody and a USA extradition request is out for him, after high ranking officials of the U.S. - including President Donald Trump - have threatened the publisher with death", said Miranda. "It is unfortunate that, from our territory and with the permission of authorities of the previous government, facilities have been provided within the Ecuadorian embassy in London to interfere in processes of other states. Our decision is not arbitrary but is based on global law".

He could face up to 12 months in British prison for breaking his bail conditions.

"Ecuador has been making some pretty outrageous allegations over the past few days to justify what was an unlawful and extraordinary act in allowing British police to come inside an embassy", she said.

Assange has denied the rape allegation, asserting the sex was consensual.

Extradition to the United States would set "a unsafe precedent" for journalists worldwide, said Miranda, adding: "this threatens to criminalise journalism globally".

Robinson said Assange would seek assurances from Sweden that he would not be sent on to America, saying: "That is the same assurance we were seeking in 2010 and the refusal to give that is why he sought asylum".

Assange has yet to be extradited from the United Kingdom, and leaked footage obtained by El Pais and published by CNN has shown a glimpse at how the 47-year-old spent his time inside the embassy.

Assange's relationship with his hosts collapsed after Ecuador accused him of leaking information about Moreno's personal life.

The three women were trying to see Assange in prison, but their application was "still pending".

The conspiracy charge against Assange seems meant to sidestep limits on prosecution potentially arising from the US Constitution's First Amendment guarantee of press freedom.

In the Guardian interview, Moreno charged that Assange "mistreated our officials [and] started to make legal threats even against who was helping him".
