Alliance of American Football suspending 'all football operations,'

But at that point, Dundon was already threatening to fold the league to get the NFL Players Association's attention, despite the AAF having created few stars that the NFL would want. CBS Sports spoke to a source close to the AAF and could confirm that operations were suspended at least for the day, and "probably indefinitely" with control owner Tom Dundon making the call.

Pro Football Talk was the first to report the news, with ESPN's Darren Rovell confirming shortly after, that the league will suspend activities.

As it stood, the National Football League collective bargaining agreement would not allow several of Dundon's asks, including a flexible system between AAF players and National Football League practice squads.

The AAF's top team, the Orlando Apollos, posted a 7-1 record to start the season.

Instead, McMahon chose to restart his own league; it is scheduled to launch next year.

Charlie Ebersol announced the AAF two months later but leapt ahead of McMahon's timeline by launching his league right after this year's Super Bowl.

Many thought the recent addition of Manziel to the AAF would help increase ratings. "The last check you got will be the last one that you get", Manziel tweeted. "We are looking at our options, one of which is discontinuing the league". This is noteworthy because Dundon's actions suggest he was not willing to wait three years - and invest more money - for the league to become whatever he hoped it would become.

"I think what we're building on the tech side will change sports", Ebersol said in January.

The AAF seemed to have a better chance of surviving than other alternative leagues, such as the USFL and the World League, because of the people and philosophies involved.

At the time, Ebersol said he viewed his business as "a tech company that owns a football league". He's still with the Memphis Express, although he's been replaced as the starting quarterback after a dismal start.
