Trump Urges General Motors To Reopen Ohio Plant In Tweet

US President Trump said that he spoke with General Motors CEO Mary Barra in person over the company's decision to close a manufacturing plant in Lordstown, Ohio.

U.S. President Donald Trump is attacking General Motors, the country's biggest automaker, for costing 5,400 factory workers their jobs when it closed a manufacturing plant where it built a compact model vehicle that Americans were increasingly not interested in buying.

He called on GM to reopen its Lordstown plant or find another owner, while insisting that the Detroit automaker "must act quickly".

General Motors said in a statement released Sunday evening that the future of plants scheduled to be closed "will be resolved between GM and the UAW".

Trump delivered equal criticism to General Motors CEO Mary Barra and the head of the local UAW union, David Green, to speed up talks between the two groups and perhaps negotiate a sale of the plant. Trump said Barra blamed sluggish action on the UAW union. It's unclear if the Trump administration responded to Green's request.

'General Motors and the UAW are going to start "talks" in September/October.

But he demanded, "Why wait, start them now!"

The automaker also says that it has "opportunities available for virtually all impacted employees" at plants that are to be shuttered.

In the second tweet, President Trump also claimed "much better" automakers are coming to the U.S. Trump added "Toyota is investing 13.5 $Billion in USA, others likewise. G.M".

Trump is expected to visit OH this week.

On Monday morning, Mr. Trump reiterated his support for the Lordstown plant to reopen quickly. The automaker did attempt to clarify its position that keeping open any of the plants that are slated to close are subject to labor negotiations with the UAW for a new contract this year.

Even as it closed the Lordstown plant, GM is continuing to manufacture the Cruze model in Mexico, Argentina and China, where the wages it pays workers are substantially less than the wages it was paying the Lordstown employees. Other plants in the United States includes the propulsion plants in White Marsh, Maryland that makes pickup truck transmissions and the transmission factory in Warren, Michigan that also makes gearboxes - mainly a 6-speed unit that is used across the board. Overall, the company said its restructuring plan would result in the elimination of about 14,000 jobs, though it has said some of those workers will be able to transfer to other facilities.
