Trump drops new NKorea sanctions because he 'likes' Kim - White House

Earlier Friday, North Korea announced that it was withdrawing from a joint liaison office near the demilitarized zone with South Korea in a move widely seen as a reaction to the imposition of the new sanctions.

"President Trump likes Chairman Kim and he doesn't think these sanctions will be necessary", White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said.

"It was announced today by the U.S. Treasury that additional large-scale Sanctions would be added to those already existing Sanctions on North Korea", Trump said on Twitter.

No agreement on the denuclearization of North Korea, which the U.S. has demanded, was reached at that summit, and Trump's order to hold off on additional sanctions marks a departure from his administration's messaging a day earlier.

The White House, however, defended Trump's decision.

Mr Trump's national security adviser John Bolton had described that step as "Important" action, tweeting, "The maritime industry must do more to stop North Korea's illicit shipping practices". Each side has blamed the other, with the US saying North Korea demanded too much sanctions relief and Pyongyang faulting Washington for rejecting its promises to reduce its nuclear program.

US President Donald Trump says he has ordered the withdrawal of recently imposed sanctions against North Korea.

The tweet set off a firestorm in the administration, with aides rushing - or waiting - to understand what sanctions Trump was referring to and what the policy implications would be.

Some experts say North Korea is attempting to convey its displeasure over the breakdown of the high-stakes nuclear summit in Vietnam.

U.S. -North Korean engagement has appeared to be in limbo since the February 27-28 summit in Hanoi, despite U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo saying on March 4 he was hopeful he could send a team to North Korea "in the next couple of weeks".

But on Friday, the president said this.

The official insisted, however, that Thursday's announcement was meant to maintain sanctions enforcement on North Korea rather than intensify pressure.

It also appeared to reflect Trump's aim to rescue a policy that less than a year ago, following his first summit with Kim in Singapore, he had declared a success. Those sanctions prompted swift pushback from the Chinese and North Korea governments.

A United Nations panel on sanctions said in the report Liaoning Danxing had been suspected of illicitly shipping Mercedes-Benz limousines to North Korea.

The Treasury Department said evasion tactics employed by North Korea included disabling or manipulating automated identification systems, physically altering vessels, transferring cargoes between ships and falsifying cargo documentation.

When the administration announced the sanctions on Thursday against the Chinese shipping companies, administration officials briefed reporters.
