Subway riders do nothing as man repeatedly kicks elderly woman in face

The attack happened on March 10 after 3 a.m., but the video did not surface until recently.

The defenseless woman was sitting alone on the subway and attempted to block the attacker's ruthless assault by shielding her face as he landed repeated blows to her head and body.

NY police arrested a 36-year-old Yonkers man Saturday in a brutal subway attack on a 78-year-old woman earlier this month that several passengers filmed on their phones, authorities said. The woman was treated for swelling and cuts to her face, reports BuzzFeed.

Marc Gomez, 36, was arrested Saturday, the New York Police Department (NYPD) said to The Daily Caller News Foundation over email.

The police said Gomez was arrested after they received an anonymous tip.

The assault occurred in the early morning hours on March 10.

Gomez's fiancee, Alicia Cox, told the New York Post that she and her daughter were on the train with Gomez when the incident took place.

NYPD Chief of Detectives Demort Shea said Gomez was in custody in a tweet Saturday.

Investigators say the man approached the woman and started punching and kicking her.

"Thank you to the worldwide community for the tremendous assistance", Shea added.
