Sobering start to the season for Ferrari - so where to now?

Sobering start to the season for Ferrari - so where to now?

Charles Leclerc obeyed a team instruction to hold position and came home fifth on his Ferrari debut.

Bottas went winless last season but said this victory was a definitive performance.

"I had no way of knowing it was the floor", Hamilton added.

Speaking at the end of a shock, but nonetheless convincing win for the Finn, Wolff admitted that he was delighted to see that Bottas had essentially rediscovered his mojo.

At the start of the race weekend, Vettel had said the two Ferrari drivers were "free to race", even though Binotto had said the German would have "priority in certain situations". Sebastian Vettel asked over the radio, with more than a hint of irritation during the Grand Prix.

Do you think Ferrari will be able to get their advantage back in Bahrain or will Mercedes continue to dominate?

With the Dutchman eventually coming out on top at Albert Park - he then pressured five-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, who was in second-place behind his team-mate Valtteri Bottas.

"Once we got to the first corner, we held position, we had the front row still", he said.

Bottas failed to win a race in 2018, struggling in the second half of the season when Mercedes put its weight behind Lewis Hamilton's ultimately successful title challenge against Sebastian Vettel.

Asked why they had asked Leclerc to hold position in the closing laps, Binotto said: "I don't think it was really a decision - it was not a hard one". "I was too slow, I just wanted to get to the end", he said.

"I had the pace to get past Seb, but the team made a decision to freeze the positions via team radio", Leclerc said.

It should be duly noted that as Honda scored its first podium since returning to F1 on its first race with Red Bull, its former engine partner McLaren had one vehicle finish out of the points and the other retire with a fiery failure in the Renault.

Red Bull team principal Christian Horner said the new engine had good power and reliability.

"I think he was probably bored and not happy because he lost the start".

"I was planning to just stay close behind, two, three seconds", Hamilton explained.

For Ferrari, they would have essentially been risking nothing for the potential to gain one point.

But one thing was clear from Ferrari's lengthy post-race media debrief: the huge promise of pre-season has not suddenly evaporated.

It was the first time in his Ferrari career that Vettel - victor of the last two races in Melbourne - had failed to be on the podium at the Australian GP.

Whiting was at the Melbourne circuit on Wednesday but passed away overnight after suffering a pulmonary embolism.
