Road to Mueller report paved by Watergate, Iran-Contra, Lewinsky, Waco

Road to Mueller report paved by Watergate, Iran-Contra, Lewinsky, Waco

He suggested in remarks to reporters Wednesday that Mueller's appointment was inappropriately made by the Justice Department and that Mueller arbitrarily decided "out of the blue" to put together the report as part of his two-year probe into Russian interference in the 2016 USA presidential election and possible coordination with the Trump campaign.

Answering questions from journalists at the White House on Wednesday, Trump said he had no idea when the report would be released, adding, "no collusion, no collusion" and "we'll see if it's fair".

The House voted unanimously last week for a non-binding resolution calling for any report in Mueller's investigation to be made public.

Trump has repeatedly slammed the Mueller investigation as a "witch hunt" and insisted there was "NO COLLUSION" with Russian Federation.

US President Donald Trump has been an outspoken critic of the Mueller probe.

"What happens when it comes back and says none of this was true, the president did not do anything wrong?"

All Comey wants, he says, is for Mueller's long-awaited report to show that the United States justice system works. He also said that he would consult with Mueller and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein to see what other information could be released "consistent with the law".

Congressional investigations also are swirling around the president.

"It's interesting that a man appointed by a deputy and he writes a report, you know, never figured that one out".

As Barr's Justice Department internally debated how much of the report to provide to Congress-which, in a rare bipartisan move, firmly demanded that they receive the whole thing-Trump this week also came out supporting the full public release of the report.

Former FBI Director Robert Mueller has been probing Russian interference in the 2016 election for nearly two years.

He then voiced his support for the report's release but reiterated, as he has said previously, that if or how the report gets released is up to recently-installed Attorney General Bill Barr.

"I got 63 million more, 63 million votes and now somebody just writes a report".

That's what President Donald Trump has shouted for two years about the special counsel's Russian Federation probe. That's a tremendous victory. But the former Federal Bureau of Investigation director said Democrats should push for something far more productive, such as taking back the White House in 2020. And now I have somebody writing a report that never got a vote?

Trump is not the only senior Washington politician who is preparing the political terrain for the eventual filing of the Mueller report.

Democrats could seize on any disclosure to the president to argue that the report really isn't confidential and should be immediately provided to them as well.

In December, 80% of self-identified Democrats said they were in favor of impeachment - that now stands at 68%, a 12-point dip.
