Ramos takes responsibility for Real Madrid woes

Ramos takes responsibility for Real Madrid woes

Zinedine Zidane is back as Real Madrid manager, signing a contract until June 30, 2022.

Zidane quit not long after Madrid won the Champions League title last season, saying that he and the club needed a change in command to keep succeeding.

"What I think is that this team needs to continue winning but I think it needs a change, a different voice, another methodology", he said at a news conference explaining his resignation a year ago.

The only silverware still on offer for Real Madrid is the league, and Barcelona holds a 12-point advantage in the table with 11 matches to play, so it would take an epic collapse by the club's biggest, bitterest rival.

Ramos apologised for the ban he received after the first leg of their Champions League last-16 against Ajax.

Zidane, who only quit last summer, is the favoured candidate across the club's board.

Sources told Marca and the Spanish radio station COPE that the La Liga club will fire manager Santiago Solari and reappoint Zidane to the post.

He was expected to be in charge of Tuesday's practice session and his first game back would be on Saturday at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium against Celta Vigo.

Sportsmail understands Real chiefs made overtures to former Chelsea boss Antonio Conte, while Jose Mourinho was also linked with a return to the Spanish capital - though the Portuguese has denied any direct contact was made.

That deal was understood to have included a staggering €700m release clause, underlining the regard he was held in by Zidane and the club just 18 months ago.

"I am looking forward to this second project, with the president, the club and the fans", Zidane said at a news conference. "When the president called me to return, I could not say no".

"I am very happy to be back, the most important thing is that".

"I do not want to forget what we won, but also not forget the bad things we did all together previous year".

"It's not the issue, now there are eleven games and then we'll see for next year, we all know what Cristiano has been here, it's the history of this club, he's been one of the best, but it's time to talk about him now".
