President Trump adds a deadline on his threat to close the border

"If Mexico doesn't immediately stop ALL illegal immigration coming into the United States through our Southern Border, I will be CLOSING...."

In a tweet Friday, President Trump ramped up his repeated threat to close the border by saying he will do it next week unless Mexico takes action.

Border officials say they're on pace to nab more than 100,000 illegal immigrants at the U.S.

"Mexico must stop illegals from entering the US through their country and our Southern Border". The official, who spoke to reporters on condition of anonymity, did not specify which ports the administration was considering closing, but said only that closures were "on the table".

Trump did not explain what he meant when he said that "Mexico has made a fortune off the US", though he has long expressed frustration with the United States' trade deficit with Mexico.

However, Levy said some asylum seekers told her they had been waiting in the area for their asylum claims to be processed for as many as four days, with young children, including toddlers, left sleeping on dirt and gravel below a bridge.

"He added: "...through their country and our Southern Border.

US Customs and Border Patrol Commissioner Kevin McAleenan said, "A high number for us is 4,000, a crisis level is 6,000". In retaliation, Trump refused to sign wider spending bills, leading to much of the federal government having to shut down for 5 weeks.

Prosecutions of single migrant adults caught crossing the border for the first time in and around Del Rio, Texas, were suspended in February amid lack of jail space, said a U.S. Border Patrol official.

So far, the plan Department of Homeland Security says it will commit to is pulling some officers from legal ports of entry to help with the influx of migrants crossing illegally, a senior department official told reporters on Friday. "We don't in any way want a confrontation with the United States", he said.

Meanwhile, in Washington, Trump has spent months clashing with lawmakers over his long-promised border wall and the fight included questions from Democrats on whether there actually was a "crisis" at the border.

Trump has threatened to close the border several times before but not followed through.

Trump had declared the border emergency under a law that lets him shift budget funds to address dire situations.
