Podcast: How badly will Brexit end for the UK?

Podcast: How badly will Brexit end for the UK?

The Prime Minister is expected to bring her Withdrawal Agreement back for a third vote early next week despite its overwhelming 149-vote defeat on Tuesday.

Talks are continuing with the Democratic Unionist Party, which said there were "still issues to be discussed" with ministers about the deal and the contentious Irish backstop measures.

Theresa May is planning to hold another "meaningful vote" on her withdrawal deal by Wednesday - after it was overwhelmingly rejected on two previous occasions. He warned that it risked leaving the EU paralysed if British MEPs were not elected in May's European parliament elections, but a new prime minister then revoked article 50 before July - when the European parliament first sits.

The vote was defeated by a margin of 334 votes to 85, meaning it would not have passed even if Labour MPs who abstained had supported it.

Mrs May was given the green light for an extension to Article 50 following a Commons vote by MPs, but she will still have to seek this from the bloc.

The March to Leave set off from the North East city on Saturday morning, and will make its way over to London over a 14-day period, arriving in the capital on March 29, where a mass rally will take place on Parliament Square - although Mr Farage will not be completing the full distance.

Speaker of the House John Bercow was criticised by a number of Conservative Brexiter MPs for not selecting any of the amendments which would categorically rule out a second referendum; although, as he pointed out, any MPs strongly opposed to a second referendum could vote against Amendment H without difficulty.

And it would be for the leaders of those states "to consider such a request, giving priority to the need to ensure the functioning of the European Union institutions and taking into account the reasons for and duration of a possible extension".

'The alternative if Parliament can not agree the deal is much worse.

Mrs May said last night: 'If Parliament can agree the deal before the European Council on March 21, we will seek a short technical extension to pass the necessary legislation. But the failure of everyone else to come up with anything close to an alternative plan means that her deal remains the most likely outcome.

The Defence Secretary was one of seven Cabinet Ministers to vote against the Government in opposition to plans to delay Brexit beyond March 29.

Mrs May said last night: "The idea of the British people going to the polls to elect MEPs three years after voting to leave the European Union hardly bears thinking about".

The European Parliament's Brexit coordinator, Guy Verhofstadt, questioned why the E.U. should grant an extension if the British government is "not ready for a cross-party approach to break the current deadlock?"

After repeated failed attempts to pass the government's Brexit deal, the United Kingdom parliament backed a motion seeking to extend the withdrawal period beyond 29 March on Thursday.
