NZ PM Ardern calls for global fight against racism

NZ PM Ardern calls for global fight against racism

Ardern previously has said reforms of New Zealand's gun laws would be announced next week and she said an inquiry would be convened to look into the intelligence and security services' failures to detect the risk from the attacker or his plans.

She emerged from a long cabinet meeting on Monday, Jacinda Ardern said her team would take the rest of the week to work out the details after agreeing to make changes "in principle", adding: "These aren't simple areas of law".

Dressed in black, Ardern opened her remarks with "As-salaam alaikum", a greeting in Arabic that means, "Peace be upon you".

"But the one thing I can assure you-you won't hear me speak his name".

Three days after the attack, New Zealand's deadliest shooting in modern history, relatives were anxiously waiting for word on when they can bury their loved ones.

The social media company said it removed more than 1.5 million copies of the video in the first 24 hours after the incident, 1.2 million of which were blocked while being uploaded.

He was remanded without a plea and is due back in court on April 5, when police said he was likely to face more charges.

"While identification may seem straightforward the reality is much more complex, particularly in a situation like this", police said in a statement.

Ms Ardern said social media could be used as a force for good, and referred to the fact thousands of pupils knew about the vigil through social media. Through a translator, he said he felt compelled to support the grieving. "We have to leave no stone unturned to not only deal with the perpetrator and ensure the criminal justice system gets to deal with him, but to understand how this could have happened in this country".

Dr Paul Spoonley, one of New Zealand's leading academics and a Fellow of the Royal Society of New Zealand, said racism was part of society and not just present in the main centres.

"We can not, for instance, just simply deal with some of the issues we face with our social media to be dealt with on a case-by-case basis", she said.

Of course, the worldwide community has also contributed positively to New Zealand's recovery. Nine of them, including a four-year-old girl, were in a critical condition. They are the publisher.

Social media companies have long argued that they are not responsible for what is put on their platforms but Ardern has countered that they can not simply be "all profit, no responsibility".

"They have cared for our fallen, and hundreds of thousands of New Zealanders have made pilgrimages to that place as an acknowledgment of what ties and binds our countries.so I reject the idea we are losing that relationship or will lose that relationship".

Her comments came as police said that the bodies of five victims have been released to their families because only 12 of the 50 dead have been identified.

Under New Zealand law, a trial is "to determine innocence or guilt", Peters said.

Ardern closed her address by noting that "on Friday, it will be a week since the attack, members of the Muslim community will gather for worship on that day".
