No link to US: Turkey's Erdogan stands by Russia missile deal

The US Defence Department spokesman Charlie Summers warned that the US could block Ankara from buying Patriot missile systems.

His comments come after Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan dismissed United States concerns earlier in the week, saying that the ink on the contract with Russia was already dry and that Ankara will consider purchases of future Russian systems.

Erdogan said "no one should attempt to tame Turkey" with threats on trade and that his country wouldn't agree to a USA proposal to sell its own Patriot missile-defence system unless it shares the technology.

The U.S. administration is offering the Patriot system as an alternative to the S-400 air defense system.

Summers said that if Turkey buys the S-400, "then they would not get the F-35s" or the Patriot system.

In one of the strongest comments on the topic yet, the U.S. Pentagon warned on Friday of "grave consequences" in the military relationship between the United States and Turkey if Ankara takes the S-400.

Ankara is slated to receive the S-400 later this year in hopes of making the system ready for use by 2020. At risk for the U.S. is the delivery of the aircraft to other allies in the consortium, which could face significant delays if Turkey were cut out, due to its role in production. Turkey and Russian Federation have told the world that the S-400s will be delivered in July, with operation beginning in October.

"Today Russian patrols will start outside of Idlib in the border region (and) Turkish armed forces' patrols will begin in the demilitarized zone", Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar said Friday.

Russian Federation has utilised the S-400 system in its military operations in Syria.

Strained ties between Ankara and Washington over the trial of an American pastor in Turkey exacerbated a sell-off in the lira past year, when the currency lost almost 30 percent of its value.

Washington has also been trying to compel India to ditch a similar S-400 deal with Russian Federation.

"We're done, this is over", Erdogan said during the interview.

"God willing, we will receive the first system in July".

As a result of the planned S-400 procurement, the Pentagon launched a large study into whether it would be possible to remove Turkey from the F-35 industrial base.

Signed into law on August 2, 2017, CAATSA, among other things, imposed new sanctions on Iran, Russia and North Korea.
