No 2020 White House run for Dem Sen. Sherrod Brown of Ohio

No 2020 White House run for Dem Sen. Sherrod Brown of Ohio

Brown, Ohio's senior U.S. Senator, said he made his decision a couple of days ago. Sherrod announced today that he has decided not to seek the Democratic nomination for president in 2020.

Citing his record on worker issues, Brown said, "I think my message has been strong enough that other candidates are picking it up". And he says his "Dignity of Work" tour has accomplished that, because numerous candidates in the race are now talking more about such issues. Brown was comfortably re-elected in the November midterm elections, earning almost 10 percentage points more than Hillary Clinton did two years prior.

And I plan on making sure that happens I will keep calling out Donald Trump and his phony populism.

Brown, a staple in OH politics who has served in the Senate since 2007, was easily reelected to the upper chamber in the 2018 midterms.

Believe me, we will fight.

Brown, in an attempt to explore whether a run for President was possible, launched a "listening tour" that included stops in Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada and SC, the four key early voting states in the 2020 primary.

Three other possible Democratic contenders - former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder, and U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley of OR - also announced this week that they would not run.

Brown, 66, is the second Democratic senator to pass on a White House bid this week; Oregon's Jeff Merkley had released a similar statement Monday. Ryan has said he will make his decision independent of what Brown does, although political insiders have argued that it's unlikely Ryan would run against Brown.

"It is how we beat Trump, and it is how we should govern", Brown said in a series of tweets Thursday. That's why I'm confident it will continue to be a focus for Democrats in 2020.

Brown, a fierce populist, won reelection in OH last fall even as every other Democratic statewide candidate fell far short, and has a proven track record of winning white working-class voters and carrying a Midwestern state that has moved hard towards the GOP in recent years. Bernie Sanders (D-Vt.), Sen.
