Huawei units plead not guilty to U.S. trade secret theft

Huawei units plead not guilty to U.S. trade secret theft

Federal prosecutors have accused Huawei of stealing details of a smartphone-testing robot called Tappy from the U.S. arm of T-Mobile, as well as violating USA sanctions against Iran.

Huawei has been facing global scrutiny after the U.S. raised security concerns against the OEM regarding 5G equipment, given the company close relation with the Chinese government.

U.S. District Judge Ricardo S. Martinez set a March 2020 trial date. "The companies entered pleas of 'not guilty".

Huawei has pleaded not guilty to U.S. charges that it engaged in a "company-wide conspiracy" to steal trade secrets from an American rival.

"This is a complex case, more complex than many cases that have come before the court, and there will be voluminous discovery materials", Assistant U.S. Attorney Todd Greenberg said in court Thursday. Huawei faces fines of more than $5 million, or three times the value of T-Mobile's secrets, according to the government.

The case centers on Tappy, a T-Mobile robot built to torture test phones.

A children's song with patriotic lyrics praising Huawei Technologies has gone viral, China's state-run tabloid the Global Times said, although the Chinese company has distanced itself from the video which has been mocked online.

Already, the UK, Germany, New Zealand have indicated that they could continue working with Huawei on 5G networks as long as a rigorous oversight on cybersecurity is in place. Replying to security related concerns in India, Huawei's James Wu, president, Southern -East Asia region at Huawei Technologies said that the company's local teams are having detailed dialogues and have a communications plan for the India market.

A federal jury in Seattle awarded T-Mobile $4.8 million in damages in 2017.

Separately, federal prosecutors in Brooklyn have charged Huawei and its affiliates with bank and wire fraud on allegations that they violated sanctions against Iran.

In the video, children in uniform white T-shirts with the Chinese characters of "China" written on them, sing: "We love our country, we love homegrown brand Huawei" and "China-made chips are the most valuable".
