Collins And King Vote No On 'Unrealistic' Green New Deal

"I rise today to consider the Green New Deal with the seriousness it deserves", Lee said, just hours before the proposal from Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a Democrat from NY, and Senator Edward Markey, a Democrat from MA, failed in the Senate, with all Republicans and four Democrats blocking the measure, The Washington Post's Dino Grandoni and Felicia Sonmez reported.

Senate Democrats on Tuesday largelyresisted a GOP-led effort to force a vote on the Green New Deal, as Republicans seek to make the ambitious environmental proposal a political wedge heading into the 2020 election.

The Senate is set to vote later Tuesday on the non-binding resolution, based on a proposal from Democrats in both the House and Senate, leading the rallying call for a Green New Deal.

McConnell, a Kentucky Republican, spent part of his opening remarks on the Senate floor criticizing the unwillingness of the Democrats to vote in favor of their own resolution text.

While he said that "climate change is no joke", Lee had a different solution: "Babies".

Democrats called the vote a "stunt" and a "mockery of the Democratic process". Almost 200 countries have signed the pact, but President Donald Trump announced in mid-2017 he would withdraw the United States because it's a "bad deal" for the US economy.

Conservative commentator Ben Shapiro retweeted Ocasio-Cortez's criticism of Lee's speech and added the caption: "I would love to see Mike Lee debate AOC. She's (Ocasio-Cortez's) conflating the two", said Payne.

Sen. Shelley Moore Capito, R-W.Va., has spoken multiple times on the Senate floor in opposition to the Green New Deal.

Rebecca Leber, a climate and environment reporter for Mother Jones, tweeted: "Repeat after me: Republicans have no climate plan".

King described McConnell's decision to hold the vote as a "cynical act of political theater", but he also acknowledged that he thought the Green New Deal proposal is "overly aggressive", "unrealistic" and "far too broad". Original co-sponsor Sen. Ed Markey (D-Mass.) joined 42 other Dems, including all six of the Senate's 2020 contenders, in voting "present".

Democrats are emboldened by growing public consensus that climate change caused by human activities is a serious problem requiring action.

"Tell that to the kids in the South Bronx, which are suffering from the highest rates of childhood asthma in the country", Ocasio-Cortez, the Green New Deal's main sponsor in the House, said during a committee hearing on Tuesday.

"We don't know if we can get to net-zero carbon emissions in 10 years, but why not try?" she said at a rally before the Senate vote.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in the Rayburn House Office Building on Capitol Hill on February 27, 2019. Payne also brought up a New York Times study from 2003 in which social workers said they encountered furniture and carpets covered in dust in these areas. It called for an upgrade to infrastructure, building resiliency to climate change-related natural disasters and working with farmers to reduce emissions. Our jobs aren't for campaigning, & that's exactly what these bluff-votes are for, ' she wrote on Twitter on Friday.

Ocasio-Cortez shot back, noting that a year ago, she'd been bartending in Manhattan.
