British PM May Lacks Support for Brexit Deal

British PM May Lacks Support for Brexit Deal

However, she voiced hope this might change in the coming days, warning the alternative could be a "slow Brexit" where Britain's departure is delayed for a long time.

The vote underlined the extent to which Mrs May has lost authority over her own MPs and ministers, although she said the Government would not be bound by the results of the so-called indicative votes.

Arch Brexiteer Jacob Rees-Mogg has seemed to indicate he might back the Prime Minister's Brexit deal, to avoid Brexit being abandoned all together.

"I apologise for changing my mind", he wrote in a United Kingdom newspaper.

"Securing the backing of a high profile ERG member like Rees-Mogg - albeit reluctantly - could dramatically improve May's numbers", said Oanda trading house analyst Craig Erlam.

The MP concluded: "Theresa May's deal is a more faltering step than I want, or feel, could be taken -but at least it is a step forward". If British MPs fail to pass the statutory instrument, it would create some "legal uncertainty" but it would not change the internationally-recognised Brexit date, which is now set as April 12 - with an offer of a further extension until May 22 if the withdrawal agreement clears the Commons hurdle in a third vote this week.

The amendment was passed, meaning that on Wednesday business in the House of Commons is in the hands of MPs.

In a vote late Monday, the House of Commons split 329 to 302 to schedule votes on a series of alternative strategies, potentially including a second referendum, keeping the U.K.in the bloc's customs union, leaving without a deal and even canceling Brexit altogether.

Her cabinet team of ministers met on Tuesday, digesting Monday's votes but also trying to plot a way of winning over the 75 lawmakers it must convince to get the so-called Withdrawal Agreement negotiated with the European Union through parliament.

"I have always thought that no deal is better than Mrs May's deal, but Mrs May's deal is better than not leaving at all", the European Research Group chairman said on a ConservativeHome podcast.

"We are stuck in this maddening impasse where we go round and round in circles, something has to move us forward".

Brexit minister Stephen Barclay had said on Sunday that if parliament took control of the Brexit process, a snap election-which the main opposition Labour party would be likely to back-could be the outcome.

The upset came after the Prime Minister yesterday admitted she still does not have enough support for her Brexit deal, amid increasing speculation about her future.

It is likely that not all amendments will be selected for debate by Commons Speaker John Bercow, and some of those selected may not be pushed to a vote.

Some lawmakers have asked May to name her departure date as the price for supporting her deal.

Business minister Richard Harrington, who resigned along with Middle East minister Alistair Burt and health minister Steve Brine, said the Government was "playing roulette" with peoples' lives and livelihoods in its handling of Brexit. "The government has failed and this House must, and I believe will, succeed".

Thirty Conservative lawmakers defied the government whip to vote in favour of the amendment, which was proposed by Oliver Letwin, a fact that will be hard for the British prime minister to ignore, according to CNN.

"If we vote it down again, there is an appreciable and growing sense that we will not leave at all, that is the risk", Johnson was quoted as saying.

It means MPs will get a series of votes on Wednesday to find out what kind of Brexit they will support.
