Andreescu arrives with unlikely Indian Wells triumph

Andreescu arrives with unlikely Indian Wells triumph

Canada's Bianca Andreescu defeated Ukraine's Elina Svitolina in the semi-final of the Indian Wells Masters to become the first wildcard to reach the women's final of the competition.

Milos Raonic was at his efficient best on Thursday afternoon, beating Serbian lucky loser Miomir Kecmanovic 6-3, 6-4 to reach his fourth BNP Paribas Open semi-final in Indian Wells.

Andreescu, who relies heavily on meditation and visualisation techniques to get her mental game in shape, had to dig deep against Kerber and trailing by a set in the decisive set found another gear late on to claim a thrilling victory. "You really deserve to win the title here", Kerber told Andreescu after the match. She broke Williams in the match's longest game that went to deuce five times when Williams' forehand went wide.

Thiem then seized his opportunity in the 11th game to go 6-5 up and served out the first of two championship points to clinch a maiden Indian Wells Open title in two hours and two minutes. "Eighteen is a good age because she's done the whole junior thing and gone to tournaments in places like Japan where there's the whole language thing and you're away from home". I know this. I was expecting a tough match.

It took Kerber several games in the opening set to get used to Williams' changing tactics. Then, when she somehow recovered to break twice and serve for the match, she was broken again - through an astoundingly poor drop shot, no less.

"When she had the chances, she just go for it", Kerber said.

A commentator raved about the young gun as she dropped to the ground and looked around in disbelief at what she'd accomplished in becoming the first ever wildcard victor at Indian Wells.

"This is just so incredible - this past week", Andreescu said in her on-court interview.

Bassett-Seguso, 51, won two WTA singles events and a pair of doubles titles during her career and in 1984 reached the U.S. Open semifinals.

"I think you definitely need it against the top of the world, to be just incredibly fit, and not just one week but many weeks in a row". "She played good, especially in the third set. This moment has become a reality so it's really, really insane".

"I really need a moment to soak this all in", she said. She served out the win, 6-3, to set a fifth meeting with world No8, Angelique Kerber, a left-hander 10 years her elder, with three Majors to her name.

Andreescu was overcome with emotion after the win.

Pegged as a player to watch after a strong junior career, Andreescu has all the tools for success on the main circuit. For make no mistake: Pliskova was also in fine form this year, victor in Brisbane, semi-finalist in Australia-beating Serena Williams-and 16-3 thus far in 2019.
