Two Telugus among 17 people killed in Delhi blaze

Most of the people died due to suffocation.

A large wedding party had booked out most of the hotel, and most of the victims were sleeping when the fire began.

The fire is believed to have been caused by a short circuit but the evacuation was hampered by narrow corridors, panelled in wood.

The injured were rushed to three hospitals including the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital (RML). Two hotel staff members had jumped from the fourth floor of the hotel in an attempt to save themselves.

GC Misra, the director of Delhi Fire Services, told AFP that the blaze had been brought under control and that 35 people were rescued by firefighters in an hours-long operation. He further said that a license is issued to a hotel only after inspection.

As many as 25 fire tenders were rushed to the spot, and at least 35 people were rescued from the five-storey building, it is learnt.

Six people were also injured, they said. Those staying in the hotel included a group of tourists from Myanmar, broadcaster NDTV said, adding that the authorities were trying to locate them.

The Delhi government has ordered a magisterial probe into the matter, home minister Satyendar Jain said.

Twenty-five fire engines responded to the blaze, which had engulfed all but the ground floor of the five-story hotel, fire officer Vijay Paul said.

Spokesperson Saurabh Bhardwaj tweeted: "Will Delhi ever see a Commissioner of MCD or Chief of fire being suspended for such huge loss of innocent human lives".

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed grief on the incident and offered condolences to the family of those killed.

There were 53 people in the 45-room budget hotel, which had a canopy on the terrace, housing what appeared to be a restaurant.

Fire accidents are not uncommon in Indian cities, where builders often flout safety regulations.

Among the 17 dead was one child, fire officials reported.
