Massive crash takes out 21 cars in final stages of Daytona 500

Massive crash takes out 21 cars in final stages of Daytona 500

His first outing with new crew chief Chris Gabehart sent the duo to Victory Lane and Hamlin is on the select list of drivers with multiple wins in "The Great American Race".

Had they not agreed, Hamlin and Busch would have been in a drag race, with some combination of Joey Logano and Michael McDowell behind them. Gibbs' son, J.D., died last month at the age of 49 after a long battle with a degenerative neurological disease. Hamlin said when he arrived at Daytona International Speedway that both the 500 and this season were dedicated to JD Gibbs.

The famous Florida racetrack was the scene for chaos as NASCAR racers were involved on no fewer than five crashes in the final 20 laps of the 200 in regulation.

"He's got two, I've got none, and that's just the way it goes sometimes", Busch said. "We are desperately going to miss him for the rest of our lives, but his legacy still lives on through Joe Gibbs Racing and we're proud to do this for them".

Hating on Sunday was Kyle Busch.

"I thought that was the best move for us". I wrecked a lot of cars.

Caught in the pack of cars spinning out of control behind Hamlin were Ryan Blaney, Aric Almirola, and defending Daytona 500 champion Austin Dillon, all credited with a decent shot at taking this year's Daytona. And it was an emotional win.

By winning this race, Hamlin became the first driver to lock himself into this season's playoffs, which are not scheduled to get underway until the 27th race of the season at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in mid-September. "So you just have to survive to that point".

Jamie McMurray, the 2010 victor, led six laps and was in the mix until he was collected in one of the late accidents.

William Byron and Alex Bowman were the youngest front row in race history but had little to show for it after the race. For a relatively tame first 190 laps, the last 10 featured three massive race-altering wrecks, with practically half the field unable to finish the race. Hamlin - the 38-year-old driver who earned his 32nd career Cup Series win to open his 14th full-time season - went with a grilled cheese and a peanut butter cup milkshake.

But, Tony Stewart had a different opinion while also trying to put the Thursday races into a different context.

The crash, which occurred shortly after a restart, led to the 10th caution of Sunday's race.
