LG Announces V50 ThinQ 5G Flagship with Optional Second Screen

LG Announces V50 ThinQ 5G Flagship with Optional Second Screen

In a odd move on LG's part, the V50 ThinQ's second screen attachment not only isn't coming to Canada, but is also skipping out on a US release as well.

It runs on Qualcomm's Snapdragon 855 chipset, supported by 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, with microSD expansion up to 2TB.

The G7 started at £599/$599, and we'd hope to see the G8 hit a similar area, if a little high - so look for it around £649/$649, or perhaps £699/$699. There's no word yet on pricing or a precise launch date, though. LG calls this the "Z camera", and it's used to draw a very quick, very accurate 3D map of whatever you put in front of it. The controls are limited to specific apps and features - phone calls, alarms, and media playback for now - but LG says it's working to develop more uses.

Despite this, the device still has a face unlock feature for those who prefer to use their face to open their device.

Quoting a marketing director at LG Electronics France, some French media outlets reported that LG was withdrawing from the European smartphone market. LG implemented a face unlock system with this sensor, of course, but you can also raise your hand in front of the phone, move it around a bit, and the G8 will do some whole-hand biometrics.

Elsewhere the V50 provides plenty of grunt with the new Snapdragon 855 processor and 6GB of RAM. LG V50 ThinQ specifications The LG V50 ThinQ features a 6.4-inch OLED display with 1440x3120 pixel resolution. On the rear camera, the G8 can apparently film in portrait mode, analysing depth in real time to deliver in-focus subjects and blurred backgrounds. But if you want LG's most experimental ideas, you might have to give up on that 5G dream and spring for LG's other high-end handset, the G8. The display is protected with a coating of Corning Gorilla Glass on top.

What's perhaps most noteworthy about the V50 beyond its 5G connectivity, is the fact that LG is releasing a second screen attachment for the smartphone. That's boosted by LG's stereo Boombox speaker, while its "tuned in collaboration with Meridian Audio" sound is augmented by DTS:X and MQA support and a 32-bit Hi-Fi Quad DAC. Just wave your hand in front of the device or pinch the air. It's the first G-series phone to pack an OLED display - 6.1in of 564ppi loveliness - with a now-familiar notched full-screen display. But considering how carriers are desperately racing towards that 5G utopia, you'd think they'd grab every opportunity they can to make a 5G-related splash.
