It’s your turn to get ready for surprise, Pakistan Army tells India

Tuesday's cross-border air strikes by the Indian Air Force (IAF), which Pakistan claims its fighter jets successfully repelled, wasn't alone instigated by the 14 February Pulwama terror attack.

Pakistan officials said that Indian warplanes did breach its airspace and drop a payload over Balakot in the country's northwest, but said there was no damage or casualties. The Himalayan region has been divided between India and Pakistan for more than 70 years.

He emphasised that the outfit was responsible for the attack against the CRPF personnel in Pulwama and urged Pakistan to live up to its public commitment against terrorism and take further actions against JeM and other camps. Pakistan denied it was involved, while India said its neighbour had a "direct hand" in the attack and accused it of providing sanctuary to the militant group.

Khan said the dead included a woman and her two children in Nakyal along the Line of Control (LoC), the heavily-militarised de facto border between India and Pakistan.

Lt. Col. Devender Anand, an Indian army spokesman, said Pakistani soldiers attacked Indian positions overnight along the boundary in Kashmir, the so-called Line of Control.

TRT World spoke to New Delhi-based journalist Ishan Russel, who says Indian government was under pressure to act against Pakistan.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a high-level Cabinet Committee on Security meeting in New Delhi along with Union ministers Nirmala Sitharaman and Arun Jaitley on the attack.

The airspace violation by Indian jets capped 12 days of bitter exchanges between the two nuclear-armed hostile neighbours, triggering worldwide alarm, with China and the European Union calling for both sides to show restraint.

Numbers estimated by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) also showed that between 1993 and 2006, more than 20 percent of Pakistan's annual government expenditure was spent of the military.

It had strongly reiterated its appeal to all members of the global community to support the proposal to list terrorists, including JeM chief Masood Azhar, as a designated terrorist under the 1267 Sanctions Committee of the UN Security Council, and to ban terrorist organisations operating from territories controlled by Pakistan. He said there were no casualties and refused to discuss India's incursion into Pakistan.

Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi labelled the airstrikes an unwarranted "grave aggression by India", and said Pakistan had a "right to respond". They said they had been expecting an Indian response to the suicide bombing.

The purported attack was India's first use of air strikes against Pakistan since 1971, when the two went to war over Bangladesh's independence.
