Irving shines as Celtics top Knicks

Irving shines as Celtics top Knicks

Boston Celtics point guard Kyrie Irving can become an unrestricted free agent this summer if he declines his 2019-20 player option with the team, and a handful of former and current Cavs players believe Irving will sign with the New York Knicks or Brooklyn Nets.

Knicks fans are hoping Irving will be willing to sign with them - and he got a loud ovation from the crowd of 19,700 at Madison Square Garden when the starting line-ups were announced.

The contest came just one day after the Knicks traded injured Kristaps Porzingis to the Dallas Mavericks which will give NY the funds to go after top free agents this summer. In addressing a reporter's question Friday afternoon before the game, Irving said he doesn't "owe anybody sh*t" and "ask me July 1" when it comes to his free agency decision. First, disgruntled New Orleans Pelicans big man Anthony Davis asked for a trade but would not consider re-signing if acquired by the Celtics, fearing Irving might not be with the franchise for the long haul, sources told ESPN's Brian Windhorst.

If the Knicks get a superstar or two this summer with all the cap space they opened up on Thursday, they'll be vindicated.

Irving entered Friday averaging 23.7 points, 6.9 assists and 4.8 rebounds in 43 games this season.

Kyrie Irving heard the "We want Kyrie!".

"I appreciate the fans, I appreciate the support, but it's really about our team now and what we want to accomplish this season - and that's a championship, so my focus is stuck on that".

Damyean Dotson scored 22 points and Kevin Knox had 21 for the Knicks, who dropped their 12th straight.

Celtics: Al Horford and Gordon Hayward each had 14 points. "You know, I understand that, obviously, we got a lot of younger guys that kind of look up but it's a business, man".

Irving could have said nothing, but he didn't. "So I wish them the best".

When pressed further, the 2016 National Basketball Association champion said that he will do what he feels is best for his career.

Along with his "July 1st" comment, Irving also mentioned that he acknowledges the New York Knicks "positioning themselves for this summer and respects the organization", but that "obviously Boston's still at the head of that race", per Jay King of The Athletic.
