Emiliano Sala: Nantes threaten Cardiff City with legal action over payment

Emiliano Sala: Nantes threaten Cardiff City with legal action over payment

Cardiff believe there are a series of questions that still need to be answered, especially about the ownership of the Piper Malibu aircraft, which crashed North of Guernsey on January 21.

After a series of phone calls from the French club, Sky Sports News understands Cardiff received the first letter from Nantes' lawyers more than a week ago.

Sala and his pilot David Ibbotson have been missing since shortly after their plane took off from France on January 21.

A spokesman said: "Tragically in video footage, one occupant is visible amid the wreckage".

It is now claimed that Nantes are threatening legal action if they do not receive a payment within 10 days.

However, it is not clear whether the body discovered is Sala's or Ibbotson's.

Cardiff are reported to be committed to honouring the deal but not until they have been provided with sufficient documentation.

It is understood that the agreement between the clubs was to process the payments in instalments over three years.

French club Bordeaux are also entitled to a cut of the fee, thought to be 50% - Sala was on their books from 2012 to 2015 before joining Nantes.

A body was spotted in underwater images of the wreckage and Britain's Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) has launched an operation to try and recover it. "If we are successful, we will consider the feasibility of recovering the aircraft wreckage".

"Strong tidal conditions mean we can only use the remotely operated vehicle (ROV) for limited periods each day and this will mean that progress is slow".
