Consumer Reports stops recommending Tesla 3

Consumer Reports has dropped the Tesla Model 3 and several other vehicles from its list of "recommended" vehicles due to declining reliability. Following a Consumer Reports survey, more issues were uncovered.

The report specifically cites issues with the vehicle's touchscreen dashboard being prone to freezing, along with consumer complaints involving suspension, cracked glass, and paint issues.

"A Tesla spokesperson told Consumer Reports the company had already made "'significant improvements' to correct the issues that Model 3 owners raised" with the publication.

A Tesla spokesperson told Consumer Reports that numerous issues being cited have already been resolved, noting, "The vast majority of these issues have already been corrected through design and manufacturing improvements".

"Consumers expect their cars to last - and not be in the fix shop".

The new data from Consumer Reports was derived from its annual Owner Satisfaction survey, whose data encompassed July through September 2018.

Indeed, besides being the largest vehicle market in the world, China is also the largest EV market, with local players vying for market share with foreign brands, including Tesla, which for now is the undisputed leader in the luxury segment but with a host of other high-end EVs coming to the market its position could soon be challenged.

Update, Feb. 21, 5:30 p.m.: In the conversation between CR and Tesla, there are some instances where Tesla asks for more specifics about alleged defects, such as concerns about door handles, and CR says that no further specific information could be provided, or, in the case of Tesla's question about which specific trim pieces were loose, Consumer Reports replied simply that "members complained about loose interior trim or moulding", without providing further information.

"When we look at the Model 3 a lot of the issues are the electronics".

Tesla also received another ding on Consumer Reports' latest rankings.

"While most Tesla Model 3 owners are very happy with their cars, they're also having problems with them", Fisher said. Tesla claimed numerous problems noted in the report have already been addressed. That kind of love-hate relationship isn't uncommon for iconic vehicles with persistent quality issues, such as the Jeep Wrangler and Chevrolet Corvette, he said. The top five brands in the survey are Subaru (81), Genesis (80), Porsche (79), Audi (77) and Mazda (76).
