China accuses USA of trying to block its tech development

"Our review of the right policy approach to 5G security and resilience is still ongoing".

A Canadian security expert says Ottawa will be cheering from the sidelines over fresh signals that Britain believes it can manage any 5G security risks posed by Huawei Technologies. The United States has said their equipment could be used to spy on Americans.

Earlier this month, the chief of Britain's foreign intelligence service said Britain should avoid relying on a monopoly provider of equipment in new 5G mobile networks, but that there were no easy answers to concerns about using Huawei.

Still, three of Canada's partners in the Five Eyes intelligence-sharing group - the United States, Australia and New Zealand - have forbidden the use of Huawei products in 5G network development, though the US ban is limited to government agencies - at least for now.

What are the security concerns over Huawei?

The federal government is weighing Huawei's possible participation in a 5G wireless system that will allow Canadians to do more on cellphones and other internet-connected devices at vastly greater speeds. "If we were ever pressured to maliciously violate the trust of our customers, we would rather shut the company down", the spokesperson said.

A report by the Financial Times cites "two people familiar with the conclusion" of analysis into the perceived threat of Huawei.

Huawei is the world's No. 1 telecom supplier and No. 2 smartphone maker. Last month Meng, who is the daughter of the Huawei founder, was charged with wire fraud that violated USA sanctions on Iran.

It should be pointed out that so far, GCHQ has found no evidence that Huawei has put backdoors or is otherwise in league with the Chinese state fuelling speculation that this has been largely caused by jingoism from the US.

A spokesman said: 'As was made clear in July's HCSEC (Huawei Cyber Security Evaluation Centre) oversight board, the NCSC has concerns around Huawei's engineering and security capabilities. While not commenting Monday on the media reports, it added: "We have set out the improvements we expect the company to make".
