Venezuela's Guaido calls for new protests as pressure on Maduro rises

Maduro, who so far appears to have the backing of the decisive military, has dug in, accusing the USA of orchestrating a coup by encouraging Guaido to declare himself interim president and then leading a chorus of nations that immediately recognized his rule.

The diplomatic friction and defection was triggered by USA recognition of opposition leader Juan Guaido as Venezuela's interim president.

The duelling appeals from the two rivals again put the military centre stage in the global debate over who holds a legitimate claim to power in the South American nation.

Rodriguez said the outlook is similar to what happened to Libya in 2011, after the Obama administration froze the government's assets in retaliation for Moammar Gadhafi's crackdown on protesters during the Arab Spring.

Vecchio, who lives in Florida, met with Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs David Hale.

"Unless elections are announced within eight days, we will be ready to recognize Juan Guaido as "President in charge" of Venezuela in order to trigger a political process", Macron said. "I sent many messages to Donald Trump", he said.

Guaido took advantage of a major street demonstration on January 23 to swear himself in as the country's rightful leader, accusing Maduro of usurping power following a disputed 2018 re-election that countries around the world described as a fraud. In fact, a coalition of Latin American nations, the Lima Group, has led the fight against Maduro and has specifically requested USA help.

The U.K. government said it is up to the Bank of England to decide what to do with the "significant amount" of gold it is holding under contract for the embattled Venezuelan regime of Nicolas Maduro.

"We can not hand pick leaders for other countries on behalf of multinational corporate interests", she said one tweet.

Britain, Germany, France and Spain all said they would recognise Mr Guaido if Mr Maduro failed to call new elections within eight days, an ultimatum Russian Federation said was "absurd" and the Venezuelan foreign minister called "childlike". "No one can give us an ultimatum", Maduro told CNN Turk in an interview dubbed into Turkish from Spanish.

Russia, Belarus, Bolivia, Iran, Cuba, Nicaragua, El Salvador and Turkey voiced support for Maduro, while China called for resolving all differences peacefully and warned against foreign interference. This is not a US -sponsored anything.

National Constituent Assembly: Maduro convened the staunchly pro-government assembly after four months of opposition protests that left about 125 dead in 2017.

The US, Canada, most Latin American nations and many European states said Mr Maduro stole his second-term election win last May.

At a special UN Security Council session Saturday, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo described Maduro as part of an "illegitimate mafia state" responsible for Venezuela's economic collapse.

"Seventy-four years ago, the Auschwitz concentration camp was liberated, and today, just as our country is also fighting for its freedom, we thank the Prime Minister of Israel Benjamin Netanyahu for the recognition and the support", Guaido tweeted.

Russia, meanwhile, accused Canada and the USA of encouraging a coup.
