US House votes to reopen some agencies shut down in wall fight

US House votes to reopen some agencies shut down in wall fight

For now, there is still no end in sight to the current shutdown, which has impacted roughly a quarter of the federal government and hundreds of thousands of federal workers.

He denied this allegation and insisted that the White House couldn't be in chaos due to the fact that "there's nearly nobody in the W.H. but me, and I do have a plan on the Shutdown".

Hundreds of thousands of USA government workers have missed their first payday of the year as the partial shutdown of federal agencies bites deeper.

In Miami, an entire airport terminal will be closed this weekend because of a shortage of security workers.

Sen. Lindsey Graham says he encouraged Trump during a telephone conversation Sunday to reopen government for a short period to try to negotiate a deal with Democrats to end the impasse.

As the partial government shutdown slipped into the record books Saturday, members of Congress had left town, no negotiations were scheduled and President Donald Trump tweeted into the void.

Both Republicans and Democrats also said they believe the move would likely be challenged in court, blocking construction of a wall the administration has said is needed immediately to address an urgent "crisis" on the border.

The New York Times said it was not clear if the investigation to determine whether Mr Trump was deliberately working for Russian Federation or had unintentionally been influenced by Moscow was still being pursued.

The "easy solution is for me to call a national emergency ... but I'm not going to do it so fast", Trump said.

Trump, referring to a reporter from the "Amazon Washington Post", hit back at the notion that he has no plan for the ongoing shutdown. But on Friday, digital rights advocates called on Democratic lawmakers to expand their fight against the wall into a fight for all human and constitutional rights-instead of suggesting alternative "border security" proposals that would infringe on civil liberties. "The president says 'Let's make a deal, then open up the government.' Nancy Pelosi says even if you opened up the government I wouldn't fund a wall".

House Democrats have refused to compromise on funding for the border wall calling it ineffective and even "immoral" and the president will not sign government funding legislation that does not fund the wall as the shutdown reaches its 22nd day.

Since that meeting both sides have blamed each other.

The House, now in Democratic control, passed a series of bills this week that would fund many of those agencies - including the departments of Agriculture, Treasury and Interior - through the end of this fiscal year. "We need money for a barrier".

But the South Carolina Republican told "Fox News Sunday" that Trump wants a deal first.

Using the trappings of the White House to make a point is a standard procedure.

Replied Hoyer, "Oh no, I think there was an election, and he did raise that question".

After meeting with Trump on Friday, Republican Senator Lindsey Graham of SC said it was clear to him and the president that "Democrats don't want to make a deal and will never support border wall/barriers".

According to the Associated Press, senior White House aide Jared Kushner - Mr Trump's son-in-law - is among those who have cautioned the president against declaring a national emergency.

Overall, Democrats appear somewhat more conciliatory than Republicans.

But the measures are unlikely to be approved by the Senate, which is controlled by Mr Trump's Republicans. "Build the wall!" and he pledged that Mexico would pay for it. However, two-thirds of Republicans would support the president's decision to use those powers.
