Trump threatens to cut off funds for California wildfire relief

Trump threatens to cut off funds for California wildfire relief

As President Donald Trump's government shutdown enters its third week, the president said that he plans to cut off federal aid to California wildfire victims.

"Billions of dollars are sent to the State of California for Forest fires that, with proper Forest Management, would never happen, ' the president tweeted Wednesday morning, after initially misspelling it 'Forrest" in an earlier tweet.

"Unless they get their act together, which is unlikely, I have ordered FEMA to send no more money", the president declared. "It is a disgraceful situation in lives & money!" the president said, referring to the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

A day earlier, Trump visited the scorched remains of Paradise, a city of 27,000 that was mostly destroyed by a wildfire that killed at least 86 people and leveled more than 10,000 homes.

During an August cabinet meeting, Trump and other officials downplayed the role of climate change on wildfires, while discussing the abundance of fallen trees creating a natural accelerant. FEMA did not immediately have a comment for the record when asked by The Daily Caller News Foundation.

"We have been put in office by the voters to get things done, not to play games with lives", Newsom tweeted.

The congressman then tried to direct Trump's attention to the people in his strongly Republican district who have been hurt by the fires. If so, it's not working well so far, since Pelosi instantly responded by fingering Trump's buddy and her fellow Californian, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, and demanding that he join her in defending their state from Trump's destructive threats.

"I'm already taking action to modernize and manage our forests and emergency responses", he added in a post to Twitter. Jerry Brown and Gov. -elect Gavin Newsom, during which he promised that the federal government would continue to support the state in the face of these deadly wildfires.

In a Tuesday event on wildfire safety, Newsom had praised Trump for always providing California with necessary disaster relief funds.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi fired back stating the president's statement "insults the memory of scores of Americans who perished in wildfires previous year & thousands more who lost their homes".

Trump's statements on California are not the first time he's criticized the state for how it has dealt with wildfires.

The Camp Fire in California past year was the costliest natural disaster anywhere in the world in 2018, with a total cost $16.5 billion, according to a report this week by the reinsurance company Munich RE.
