Trump surrenders to Democrats, ends government shutdown

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell plans a vote on a Democratic proposal to fund the government for three weeks but does not include the wall funding that Trump wants.

While staunchly defending his wall project - which he claims is needed to keep out criminals and drug traffickers - Trump made no announcement regarding his demand for $5.7 billion to fund the barrier, a key promise made to his right-wing supporters. President Trump announced the new spending arrangement in a press conference outside the White House.

The Washington Post reports the pact would reopen the government for three weeks while leaving the issue of border wall funding to further talks.

Most Democrats oppose direct funds for wall construction, but some have begun publicly advocating for negotiating a solution that includes boosted border funding, including for border structures.

At the White House, President Donald Trump told reporters he'd support "a reasonable agreement".

Sen. Collins has bucked Trump and the Republican party in the past when she, Murkowski, and the late Sen.

The anticipated votes follow a dramatic day in which Trump agreed to postpone his State of the Union address after Speaker Nancy Pelosi disinvited him from making the speech next week in the House chamber.

The partial government shutdown has entered its 35th day, breaking the record of the longest government shutdown in USA history.

Trump triggered the shutdown, which began on December 22 and idled some 800,000 government employees, with his wall-funding demand. Senate Republicans brought the proposed deal up in a bill that would exchange border wall funding for deportation protections that cover the immigrant group known as dreamers.

The Senate was unlikely to pass these bills since it would need 60 votes to do so, which neither side appeared to have.

The Senate was scheduled to work on Friday, but it was unclear whether it might take any action on ending the shutdown.

"We will have great security, and I want to thank you all very much", he concluded.

"If we don't get a fair deal from Congress, the government will either shut down on February 15, again, or I will use the powers afforded to me under the laws and the Constitution of the United States to address this emergency".

A bipartisan group of senators proposed a three-week spending plan created to buy time for congressional negotiations over border security spending.

The arrangement, which would require passage in the House and Senate and Mr Trump's signature, would leave his request for wall funding for later talks, a House Democratic aide said. Pelosi responded by saying she won't allow the speech in the chamber unless government agencies are reopened. "Hopefully, it will be unnecessary", he continued, referencing his threat to to make an emergency declaration to build the border wall he has long promised his supporters.

It was one of two measures created to end the partial government shutdown that failed in the Senate on Thursday.

Outside political advisers to the President and his allies on Capitol Hill have also anxious major flight issues would amplify the blame Trump its already facing for the shutdown. That plan would have increased borrowing by about $20 billion to find the border wall and spend $12.8 billion on disaster relief, according to the Congressional Budget Office.

The measure would have also provided three years of continued protection against deportation for 700,000 immigrants brought to the USA illegally as children.
