Trump offers temporary protection for undocumented immigrants in exchange for wall

Trump offers temporary protection for undocumented immigrants in exchange for wall

And Chuck Schumer, the top Democrat in the US Senate, noted that Trump himself had scrapped previously existing protection for the immigrants whom he is now offering to shield.

But Trump did not budge on his $5.7 billion demand for the wall and, in essence, offered to temporarily roll-back some of his own hawkish immigration actions that have been blocked by federal courts.

"Get something out there the president can say, 'I can support this, ' and it has elements from both sides, put it on the table, then open it up for debate", Lankford said on ABC's "This Week".

Prior to the address and responding to reports on Trump's decision to offer temporary relief to undocumented migrants residing in the United States in exchange for wall funding, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said that the move to reopen the government was a "non-starter".

The source familiar with the president's upcoming speech said Trump does not plan to declare a national emergency along the U.S. -Mexico border, a step he threatened to take earlier in his struggle with Congress over the shutdown. The proposal also extends to immigrants with Temporary Protected Status, all of whom will be able to remain in the country if a new deal is reached.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said the proposal to provide temporary protections for some undocumented immigrants was "unacceptable". And Nancy PelosiNancy Patricia D'Alesandro PelosiSunday shows preview: Shutdown negotiations continue after White House immigration proposal Rove warns Senate GOP: Don't put only focus on base Senate to take up Trump's border-immigration plan next week MORE made it very hard when she said that a wall is amoral. Disagreement over border-wall funding has prevented the formation of a new budget that would re-open the government.

"Nancy Pelosi has behaved so irrationally & has gone so far to the left that she has now officially become a Radical Democrat", the president tweeted. Last week, Trump said he would utilize his executive powers if Congress refused to make a deal.

In his new proposal, Trump said he was willing to compromise by offering a three-year "provisional status" to 700,000 young illegal immigrants brought into the USA by their parents - the so-called "Dreamers".

US President Donald Trump called it a "common sense compromise that both parties should embrace".

And Pelosi has said members of her party would not support any spending package that included funds for the wall that Trump envisions. The U.S. public is not convinced that a border wall is a panacea for countering illegal immigration, terrorism or drug trafficking.

"Let's at least pay them on Thursday, so they don't have to go through more angst", Warner said.

"Offering some protections back in exchange for the wall is not a compromise but more hostage taking", Schumer tweeted.

The president pushed for the United States dollars 5.7 billion to fund the "strategic deployment" of a barrier system or wall on US's southern border, saying this is not a 2,000-mile concrete structure from sea to sea.

However, there did appear to be one concession on the design of the US-Mexico border wall.

The money would be added to spending bills, largely negotiated between the House and Senate, which the House plans to vote on next week.

The "Dreamers", who are mostly Latin American, are protected from deportation under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.

Trump also underlined in his speech that he was making his pitch to "break the logjam" that has paralyzed Washington since late December, leaving roughly a quarter of the government closed and forcing roughly 800,000 federal employees be furloughed or work without pay. The Trump administration announced in September 2017 it would rescind DACA, but the policy remains in effect under a court order.
