Trump associate Stone arrested, faces obstruction charge

Stone, 66, a longtime friend and informal political adviser to Trump, said he never discussed Wikileaks or Russian Federation with Trump, so there's nothing to reveal to Mueller about potential collusion.

Later during the interview, Stephanopolous asked Stone if he had "ever had any conversations with the president during the campaign or since the campaign about Russian Federation or the Mueller investigation?"

Getty Roger Stone, a former advisor to President Donald Trump, speaks to the media after leaving the Federal Courthouse on January 25, 2019 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Stone was released after posting $250,000 bond. He did not enter a plea.

Stone said on Fox News" "Tucker Carlson Tonight' that Mueller is looking to silence him, and vowed to fight on.

But Rep. Adam Schiff, who's now the chair of the House Intelligence Committee, said while Stone is "presumed innocent" he's going to need a better defense.

Prosecutors say Mr Stone was also contacted by unnamed "senior Trump campaign officials" to inquire about future Wikileaks releases.

The special counsel alleges that Stone lied about his interactions with WikiLeaks to the House Intelligence Committee, according to the indictment (pdf).

Stone was charged with seven counts, including obstruction of an official proceeding, making false statements and witness tampering, according to the office of Mueller, who is conducting the Russian Federation investigation.

The case is the latest in a series brought by special counsel Robert Mueller that focuses on cover-ups but lays out no underlying crime.

The indictment points to a letter Stone wrote to the House Intelligence Committee on May, 22, 2017, where Stone states he "has no documents, records, or electronically stored information, regardless of form, other than those widely available that reasonably could lead to the discovery of any facts within the investigation's publicly-announced parameters".

Stone blasted the "29-member SWAT team" raid on his Fort Lauderdale home and said he would have just turned himself in if asked.

Sunday morning, Stone said he would tell the truth about his communications with President Donald Trump and did not shut the door on the possibility of cooperation with special counsel Robert Mueller.

"Mr. Stone, during his time as a student at George Washington University, was a junior scheduler on the Nixon reelection committee. Mr".

The indictment described in detail numerous emails and text messages "during the 2016 campaign in which he discussed Organisation 1, its head, and its possession of hacked emails". Mr Stone had been predicting his indictment for some time.

Stone spoke to reporters after appearing in court.

He also pledged his support for Trump - one of his "oldest friends" - saying, "I have made it clear that I will not testify against the president because I would have to bear false witness against him".

Stone apparently lived by his own advice and refused to testify about WikiLeaks and the whole "Russiagate" affair, invoking the Fifth Amendment constitutional protection against self-incrimination last December. After a knock, one agent says, "FBI".

Stone said he thinks he was targeted because he is a longtime friend of Trump and helped Trump to defeat Clinton.

While the indictment provides some new insight into the Trump campaign, it deals largely with what prosecutors say were Stone's false statements about his conversations with conservative writer and conspiracy theorist Jerome Corsi and NY radio host Randy Credico.
