Rich Scangarello heads to Denver

The Cincinnati Bengals were linked to Gary Kubiak before he chose to leave the Denver Broncos and join the Minnesota Vikings.

The Minnesota Vikings got a package deal when they hired Gary Kubiak as an assistant head coach and offensive advisor. He'll be following his father to Minnesota and re-joining the staff as a quarterbacks coach under offensive coordinator Kevin Stefanski.

The Packers submitted a request to interview Shanahan's receivers coach and passing game coordinator Mike LaFleur, the brother of Green Bay's new head coach, Matt LaFleur.

Scangarello holds four seasons of National Football League experience - he served as an offensive quality control coach for Atlanta (2015) and Oakland (2009) - and coached for 17 years at the collegiate level.

A first-time offensive coordinator in the NFL, Scangarello spent the past two seasons under the tutelage of 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan. But after Gary Kubiak left the coordinator void after initially accepting the job, the Niners changed their mind and allowed the Broncos to conduct an interview with Scangarello. For more than 15 years, he and Gary Kubiak have worked closely together during the former head coach's stints with the Broncos, Baltimore Ravens, and Houston Texans. With his background and knowledge, it's the ideal time for Rich to be an offensive coordinator in the NFL.

The San Francisco 49ers appear to be losing one of their vital assistant coaches this offseason.

Under offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave, the Broncos built a bad habit of starting slowly. "I find this opportunity for Rich very similar to when I first became a defensive coordinator many years ago, and he is ready to take this step in his career". His NFL experience has been limited to quality control and coaching quarterbacks. Of the three quarterbacks who started for the 49ers in 2018-Jimmy Garoppolo, C.J. Beathard and Nick Mullens-only Garoppolo completed less than 60 percent of his passes.

"Coach Scangarello, he pretty much found me", Mullens said in December.
