Prince Philip taken to hospital following auto crash

Prince Philip taken to hospital following auto crash

Queen Elizabeth's 97-year-old husband Prince Philip escaped uninjured from a vehicle crash while driving on Thursday near the Sandringham estate in eastern England.

The duke emerged unharmed but two people in another vehicle were injured in the crash that occurred Thursday when the duke was driving near the Sandringham Estate, according to police and Buckingham Palace.

A Palace spokeswoman said: "On doctor's advice, the Duke of Edinburgh visited the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in King's Lynn this morning for a precautionary check-up".

The Duke was not injured in the collision, a Buckingham Palace spokesman confirmed yesterday.

Prince Phillip had collided with a auto near the royals' Sandringham Estate.

The rule also takes the various royal residences into account as well, meaning the likes of Buckingham Palace and Kensington Palace are off limits for police.

Prince Philip's black Land Rover, which he was driving, was involved in a collision with a Kia at around 3pm on Thursday on the A149 at Sandringham.

The Duke of Edinburgh managed to escape injury after his Land Rover overturned in Norfolk yesterday.

Even in his 80s, the Duke continued to compete in demanding carriage driving competitions and has previously pulled muscles in his back while driving his horse-drawn carriage.

Regardless, the accident raises a question familiar to anyone who knows an elderly driver: should Prince Philip still be driving?

The Kia driver suffered cuts to her knee while a 45-year-old woman sitting in the passenger seat broke her wrist.

Police said they breath tested both drivers at the scene, who returned negative readings.

Norfolk Police said, in accordance with policy in collisions, it breathalyzed both drivers.

Witness Roy Warne told the BBC Radio 4 on Friday that he saw the prince's SUV "careening, tumbling across the road and ending up on the other side".

Police investigating the incident said "appropriate action will be taken".

Several witnesses said the road was not closed, but many confirmed that much activity surrounding the crash scene.

The duke, who is the Queen's husband, did not join the Royal Family for their Christmas Day church service.

"I saw the vehicle flip and thought f*****g hell", witness, a barrister called Roy told the UK's Sun.

The Duke retired from royal duties in August 2017.

In Britain, licences expire when a person turns 70 and have to be renewed through a simple self-assessment test every three years.
