Oscars 2019: Biggest Snubs and Surprises From This Year's Nominees List

Oscars 2019: Biggest Snubs and Surprises From This Year's Nominees List

Tom Beasley takes a dive into the Oscar nominations to spotlight the biggest snubs and surprises from today's shortlists...

Spike Lee is finally getting some love at the Oscars, an honour Thor Diakow from Breakfast Television says is much deserved.

In what must have been a supremely challenging task, the Academy managed to narrow down the 347 feature films eligible for the coveted "Best Picture" category to the chosen few.

Instead, the Best Original Score nominees are all film-score lifers, including longtime Spike Lee collaborator Terrance Blanchard, for BlacKkKlansman, and Childish Gambino collaborator Ludwig Goransson, for Black Panther. "He'd be, certainly, celebrating with some big numbers".

But in 2019, the Oscars arguably need Disney/Marvel's "Black Panther" more than superhero movies need the academy's validation. Still, "A Star Is Born" was the sole film to land top nominations from virtually every guild group. The Silence of the Lambs made history by being a horror movie that swept the Oscars, taking home Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor and Best Actress.

Though not included on the Best Director list, Bradley Cooper is instead nominated for his acting in "A Star Is Born".

Lady Gaga arrives at the 24th annual Critics' Choice Awards in 2019 - she shared the best Actress award with Glenn Close. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the group that hands out the Oscars, has expanded its worldwide membership in recent years, and that may have helped Pawlikowski, Mueller said.

The Oscars have watched their broadcast ratings plummet in recent years - last year's telecast hit a record audience low of 26.5 million - as viewers have gained entertainment options, including streaming services.

The Oscars have joined the world's spirited "Wakanda forever" refrain, exalting "Black Panther" ― 2018's highest-grossing release ― with the first-ever Best Picture nomination for a superhero movie. "Thank you Ale A. Garcia and @marielmmayorga for waking me up". Robert Redford and Kevin Costner, you're safely still the only two handsome actors-turned-directors who won Oscars right out of the gates. Aparicio became the first indigenous woman to be nominated for lead actress, and just the second Mexican actress to be recognized in that category.

Sneaking into the race for Best Director was Pawel Pawlikowski for helming "Cold War". Stars like Gaga and Sam Sam Elliott, who earned a nod for supporting actor, have raved about working with the young director. He withdrew after homophobic tweets he had written years ago sparked a crippling backlash on social media. The film, directed by Ryan Coogler and featuring Chadwick Boseman in the titular role, received total seven nominations for the 91st Academy Awards.
