Listen to New Horizons, Brian May's first solo single in 20 years

Listen to New Horizons, Brian May's first solo single in 20 years

During its approach, New Horizons came within 2,200 miles of Ultima Thule and took images using its high-resolution Long-Range Reconnaissance Imager (LORRI), revealing more details about its odd peanut shape.

Ultima Thule, as the small, icy matter has been entitled was discovered to contain two mingled simultaneously spheres, one three times more extensive than the other enlarging about 21 miles (33 kilometers) in length. NASA's New Horizons mission flew by the object early on January 1, and the maneuver's science data will reach Earth over the course of almost two months.

It is likely an icy fragment that coalesced more than 4.5 billion years ago and that has remained in a deep freeze of the solar system's Kuiper belt ever since, some 4 billion miles from the sun.

The celestial body was nicknamed Ultima Thule before scientists could say for sure whether it was one object or two.

It's an incredible discovery, especially considering that the possibility of Ultima Thule being a binary duo had been floated a number of times over the course of the lengthy New Horizons mission.

The images are obviously very low in resolution, and it's not immediately clear if or when we'll get a better glimpse of the rock, but New Horizons still has a lot of data to beam back to Earth.

Thule is estimated to be 9 miles (14 kilometers) across, while Ultima is thought to be 12 miles (19 kilometers).

Principal Investigator Alan Stern paid tribute to the skill of his team in acquiring the image as New Horizons flew past the object at 3500km at closest approach.

Scientists are keen to study Ultima Thule as it lives in a region that has been relatively untouched since the formation of the solar system, which in turn helps them better understand planetary formation.

The images we have of the object now show no obvious impact craters, but there are hills and ridges. Its nearly nonexistent reflectivity didn't exactly help the New Horizons team as they sought it out.

New Horizons reached Pluto in July 2015 and revealed an awesome planet, rich in detail and structure.

"I don't think we have stressed enough, so I really want to say, what this spacecraft and this team accomplished is unprecedented.

The contact binary shape of Ultima Thule is consistent with models of the formation of the Kuiper Belt.

As Helene Winters, New Horizons' Project Manager, indicated, it won't stop there.

That's where Ultima Thule comes in: It looks to be a partial conglomeration of uncooked space dough-a premature mashup that could have served as the basis for a planet, but didn't.

The sun is 1,900 times fainter on Ultima Thule than it is on a sunny day on Earth. More than 100 scientists, including Heidi B. Hammel, a planetary scientist and a media liaison for the science team, gathered in the evening for a look.
