Jayme Closs found alive, suspect Jake Patterson in custody

Barron County Sheriff Chris Fitzgerald said a suspect had been taken into custody in a Facebook post Thursday.

Closs was located approximately 70 miles from her home.

The Barron County Sheriff's Office revealed Friday they have charged 21-year-old Jake Thomas Patterson of Gordon with two counts of first-degree intentional homicide and one of kidnapping. From what she told them, they believed she was there for most of her disappearance.

Kasinskas called 911 to report the girl had been found after another neighbor out walking her dog encountered Jayme and brought her to Kasinskas' house. Jayme was quiet, her emotions "pretty flat", Peter Kasinskas said.

Police said Jayme Closs was taken against her will and escaped a home where she was being held.

Fitzgerald alleged the suspect "took many proactive steps to hide his identity from law enforcement and the public". The Barron County Sheriff's Department said the girl had likely been abducted.

A woman who helped a Wisconsin girl who'd been missing for three months following her parents' deaths says the girl told her she'd been held against her will.

"She said to us: 'This person killed my parents and took me, '" Kasinskas said.

Fitzgerald said Jayme was taken against her will.

Detectives pursued thousands of tips, watched dozens of surveillance videos and conducted numerous searches in the effort to find Jayme. Details of what happened in the almost three months since the girl vanished remain unclear, he said, though he said Patterson "took many proactive steps to hide his identity from law enforcement and the general public". He said that he did not know if Jayme had been physically abused but that she was hospitalized overnight for observation and cleared and released after a checkup.

"I'm going to hug her. Squeeze her", Naiberg told the Star-Tribune. Smart was rescued nine months later with the help of two witnesses who recognized her abductors from an "America's Most Wanted" episode.

The suspect, who is unemployed, was not on the radar of investigators and had no criminal history in Wisconsin, authorities said at a Friday press conference.

Jayme vanished October 15, the day her parents, James and Denise Closs, were found fatally shot in their home near Barron, a town of 3,300 people in northwestern Wisconsin.

Naiberg says Jayme reported that she'd been held by "a guy in the woods" but was able to escape.

A woman said she was walking her dog along a rural road when a disheveled teenage girl called out to her for help, quickly grabbed her and told her she was lost.

The sheriff said the suspect had no prior contact with the Closs family, and that the teen "was the only target".

"Tonight, we actually got false news again this afternoon and I really had my hopes up then", Sue Allard said.

Jeanne Nutter, a social worker who spent years working in child protection, told The Associated Press on Friday that the girl approached her Thursday afternoon in a heavily wooded, rural neighborhood near the small town of Gordon, about 60 miles (96.5 kilometers) south of where Jayme disappeared on October 15.

"It was literally like we were seeing a ghost, because we have seen the billboards and the commercials and all that stuff, and there she is in my kitchen, you know".

Jayme has been missing since her parents, James and Denise Closs, were discovered shot to death in their home on October 15 near Barron, Wisc. The Town of Gordon, where she was found, is about an hour's drive north of Barron.
