In Germany, the auto rammed the gate of the airport

Airport traffic was suspended at Hanover airport on Saturday after a auto crashed through a barrier and drove on the runway, police have said. The vehicle was stopped by the police and the driver was detained.

Arriving flights are now diverting to nearby airports (such as Hamburg or Bremen), while departures have been suspended until further notice.

According to a statement by the police in Hannover, the 21-year-old man from Poland drove out onto the runway and followed an airplane after it had landed.

The security incident took place just over a week after police said they were tightening airport security due to terrorism fears, BBC News reported. The vehicle was searched and no risky items were found.

The man was believed to have acted alone. German publication Bild reported on its website that the man's auto had Polish registration plates.

They couldn't give further information about where he came from because he was not carrying an identity card.

There are now no indications of a terrorist background, said the statement. His motive remained unclear.

Hannover Airport (HAJ) is the ninth-largest airport in Germany, handling 5.8 million passengers in 2017.
