Hunt for dozens missing in deadly Russian Federation high-rise blast

Hunt for dozens missing in deadly Russian Federation high-rise blast

The Crisis Management Center of the Russian Emergencies Ministry's regional branch said three people had been recovered alive from the block in the industrial city 1,050 miles east of Moscow in the southern Urals.

Authorities said five people were hospitalized with injuries and 35 others remained unaccounted for.

Four people were confirmed dead and another four, including two children, were hospitalised, officials said, citing the latest information.

Almost 1,400 rescuers were searching for those who could have been buried under debris in temperatures of -17 degrees Celsius (1.4 degrees Fahrenheit), which are forecast to plunge to -24 degrees Celsius (-17 degrees Fahrenheit) overnight. It happened before dawn when most residents were still asleep.

One that was left hanging in the collapsed section of the building came crashing down as television stations aired live broadcasts from the scene. Monday was a public holiday in Russian Federation.

Russian news agency TASS reports that six people have been pulled out of the rubble, of which three died, and that 79 were missing. A search and rescue effort is underway involving 469 emergency workers.

Local authorities initially said 68 of those registered in the collapsed section of the building were unaccounted for, but later tracked down some of them.

"The chances are reducing with time", Health Minister Veronika Skvortsova said when pressed by reporters on the likelihood of finding trapped survivors.

The local branch of Russia's Federal Security Service said the blast was believed to have been caused by a gas explosion.

Local resident Anna Koroleva told Echo of Moscow radio that the explosion shattered windows of nearby buildings.

Such deadly gas explosions are relatively common in Russian Federation where much of the infrastructure dates back to the Soviet era and safety requirements are often ignored.
