House Dems Pass Spending Bills That Are Unlikely to Get Very Far

Today marks the 21st day of the partial shutdown that started days before Christmas over a standoff between President Donald Trump and congressional Democrats over funding for the President's long-promised border wall.

Lawmakers tried to reassure federal employees that Congress was aware of the financial hardship they are enduring.

Trump delivered a prime-time address to the nation on Tuesday night where he warned of a "crisis" at the southern border with Mexico, and on Thursday, he made a visit to the border.

The Senate passed the bill a voice vote.

Lindsey Graham, a Republican and close White House ally, said Thursday he doesn't see a way to resolve the shutdown dispute that has paralyzed much of the federal government.

Other senators said they recognized that the only way out of the standoff would be for Trump, Pelosi and Schumer to reach a deal that would be acceptable to them and that could pass the House and Senate and be signed into law.

The wall was the central promise of Trump's winning campaign in 2016.

The US federal government has been partially shut down since December 22 over the dispute between congressional Democrats to approve $5.7 billion that Trump seeks to fund the construction of the border wall.

In the meantime, the administration has taken steps to lay the groundwork should Trump issue the declaration.

The emergency funds had been set aside for California in the wake of devastating wildfires that tore through 1.8 million acres in the state this year, as well as Puerto Rico, Texas, and Florida as they continue to recover from 2017 and 2018's hurricanes and prepare for similar storms in the coming years.

Rep. Peter DeFazio, D-Ore., the incoming chairman of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, said in an interview that rebuilding the disaster areas is "a way higher priority benefiting the American people than a wasteful wall".

It was not clear what a potential compromise between the White House and Congress might entail.

"I often said during rallies, with little variation, that 'Mexico will pay for the Wall.' We have just signed a great new Trade Deal with Mexico". They passed two bills meant to fund most of the government while leaving room to debate border security. The move could possibly allow the president to free up billions in emergency funds for the wall through the National Emergencies Act.

The president has blamed the shutdown on Democrats, and Democrats have blamed the president.
